What current Carlton players could conceivably form part of our next premiership side?
Interesting exercise that shows we have the potential on our list right now to have a very good spine. We just need a bit of potential to turn into results.

B: ??, Livingston, Teague
HB: ??, ??, Thornton
C: Simpson, Stevens, Houlihan
HF: Fisher, Waite, Goddard
F: ??, Fevola, Betts
Foll: Bryan, Walker, Carrazzo
Int: DeLuca, ??, ??, ??

Assuming that all players meet their potential 100%.

Strengths:
-The best full-forward in the league who kicks 100 goals per season.
-Many marking options up forward.
-Speed through the mid-field with Walker, Simpson, Carrazzo and Houlihan.
-Good skills around the ball with Carrazzo, Houlihan, Simpson and Stevens.
-Leadership through the mid-field with Stevens and in the backline with Thornton.

Weaknesses:
-At the moment - depth across all lines.
-Finding a great centre half back is key to our obvious backline deficiency.
-Clearance players through the mid-field.
-Hamill/Hickmont types to set a standard for toughness and desperation

Thoughts?

I would be tempted to trade say Whitnall and the number 1 or 2 pick for say Chad Cornes? Dreaming, I know, but trading for a premium CHB could speed up our development by years. I just can't see anyone on our list who could develop into a star CHB. This is effecting the likes of Thornton, Livo and Teague who could otherwise be playing there natural attacking or support roles.

To get a guage on how many players we have who are premiership material, have a think about how many of our current side would make it into the best side going aroung at the moment - West Coast.

I would suggest we would have 4 players that would get a game with them and another 3 that are potential permiership players some time in the future. The only ones who are premiership material now are:

Kouta
Fevola
Lappin
Stevens

Potentially they will be joined by Waite, Walker and Thornton.

Given that Kouta and Lappin will be retuired by teh time e contest another flag, this gives us a certainly of 5 bona fide premiership potenial players (PPPs)to build our side around. There are probably no more than 10 other playes on our list who may make it to a PPP. Probably only half will. Gives us 10 PPPs over the next 3 years. No wonder Collo, Pagan and the club are bracing us for a few years in the wilderness, and a few years of PPs (priority picks).

Thats a pretty good summary of how it is.

Maybe our next task would be to work out who the other 5 PPP's are.

Yeah, I agree that summary makes sense. However, my contention was that young players had achieved 100% of their potential.

of the list i could only say these guys the rest i have questions marks as to wheather they will make it or not.

B: ??, Livingston, ??
HB: ??, ??, Thornton
C: ??, Stevens, Houlihan (good enough player, potential trade bait)
HF: Fisher, Waite, ??
F: ??, Fevola, ??
Foll: ??, Walker, Carrazzo
Int: ?? ??, ??, ??

guys like simmo i reckon will be good enough, but being conservative here.
Deluca i doubt will make it, same with Teague. Bryan looks promissing as does Betts but it's hard to judge with first year players.

Deluca had dropped off this season before his injury IMO.
Fish i've left in out of faith, see how he goes after the injury but i love him as a player.

it's looking pretty bare isn't it. lots of work to do.
the process is going to take another 2 years longer than i had hoped.
even Fev will get betting on by the time we reach this peak. but he is good enough to build a side around if he can keep his body in good nick

I just thought I would sneak Goddard in to see how he looked next to Waite there on the half forward line.

Fair assessment gezman. Two points that I will make: Fev is a FF and injury permitting that position is playable into your mid 30s. Simmo has shown me enough. Not just in the seniors this year but in the VFL last year. I hate making calls but if I had to choose one young player to make it, I believe it to be him.

B Thornton, Livingston, Teague
HB Russell, Hartlett, Carrazzo
C ?????, Stevens, Houlihan
HF Betts, Waite, ????
F ????, Fevola, Fisher
R ????, Walker, Blackwell
Int Setanta, Aisake, ????,
Roundabouts: Simpson, Scotland, Whitnall, Johnson

Assuming nothing:
B ?????, Thornton, ?????
HB Houlihan, ??????, Carrazzo
C ??????, Stevens, ?????
HF Betts, Waite, ?????
F ????, Fevola, ?????
R ?????, Walker, ????
Int ????, ????, ????, ????

A big key to that list above Gezman is the development of these players over the next 18 months:

Russell
Blackwell
Smith
Setanta
Hartlett
Raso

I am under no illusion that all these 6 will make it but I'd be surprised if 3 of them weren't in our best 22 in 2 yrs time. If none were to "make it", Wayne Hughes will be hung, drawn an quartered.

Russell and Blackwell are skinny 18 yr olds, just need a little more time to beef up. Smith is rated highly by DP and maybe even ahead of Bentick at this stage but his pace seems to be the main issue.

When looking at Setanta, I prefer to compare him to a typical, tall recruit in their 2nd yr of footy, i.e. 19 yr old. Probably not commanding a senior position yet but he's only been at the game for 18 months. He seems to possess that "I'm a winner at whatever I try" mentalality so I'm hopeful.

Hartlett is an unknown quantity. Only 19, tall but still skinny, barely played and had a shit Under 18 comp last yr but is supposed to possess raw talent and aggression. He's a no 25 draft pick (not too shabby), but I guess he's a toss up at this stage.

Raso - ditto hartlett as he needs to compete against the men before we can assess.

Eddie and Simmo I believe are coming along nicely. Eddie is still 18 and learning. I think we need to give him the benefit of the doubt by virtue of his age, size and that he's playing senior footy in his first yr for a shit team. This is an acheivement alone. They both need more muscle which is acheivable. Simmo appears to be gaining more confidence at this level and seemed to throw his body into the contest against the dogs. Another Simmo positive is his versatility. DP seems keen on developing him into a midfielder come backman, capable of playing on small, pacy forwards but using his pace and footskills to give us drive and precision from the backline.

So there's 8 blokes (plus Bryan) to work with added to the 9 already in your team. Throw in 4 top 10 picks, PSD's, trades over the next 2 yrs and hey presto - competitive in 2007, finals in 2008.

The patience required is the killer. Still, I'm intending to watch and take the pain on Saturday vs Weagles, knowing our time is not too far away.

Oh I forgot - Vossy needs to be added to the mix, as an assistant coach in 2007 and DP's successor in 2008.

You know we're just so far from a Premiership I can't even speculate the side.

Aside from Waite, Thornton, Fevola, Walker and Stevens who's young enough and good enough to still be playing by then anyway? Maybe you could add Fisher or Carrazzo but we're talking years away from that time so who's to say they won't drop off in form or with injury or be traded. I couldn't list anyone else in this list who I'd be confident about being there on Grand Final day.

I have no idea about any of the draftee's as we haven't seen them play at the highest level yet. Just speculation past this point.

French, Kouta, Campo and Lappin will all be gone and who knows with Whitnall.

This team is who are who I think are proven performers, that would make the Premiership team. For me there are only 7 guarantees but it all depends on how guys like Simpson, Fisher, Betts, Russell, Sporn, Hartlett etc all develop.

B: ??? -- Livingston -- ???
HB: Houlihan -- ??? -- Thornton
C: Walker -- ??? -- ???
HF: Waite -- ??? -- ???
F: ??? -- Fevola -- ???

R: ??? -- Stevens -- ???

I/C: ??? -- ??? -- ??? -- ???

Just for our SS members who are lurking on here...

Our 17th will come before your 2nd.

That should throw the cat amongst the pigeons.
Look for idiotic responses from JeffDunne, Stinger and JoffaBoy.
