(over?)analysing Brett (Ratts)?

Listening to Brett talking post match, I noticed that he pretty much always referred to players by their first (or full) name, rather than the names they're more commonly known by. Sorry to not to have exact quotes to hand, but I'm pretty sure it was "Chris" rather than "Juddy", "Nick" rather than "Stevo", etc. Maybe I'm on too much of a high after the win & he's done it before, or I'm reading too much into it, but I like that he's doing this ... to me it shows a different relationship between a coach & his players.

Some people just aren't into using 'nicknames'. I rarely, if ever call my staff by their nicknames. I think Bosses have to have some sort of separation from their staff and/or players along the way no-matter how small.

There's no doubt Ratts has a lot of affection for his players, and wants the team to feel like a big family. He loves the club, that much is clear, which is one of the things I love most about him as a coach.

In my personal & professional life I always use the name people introduce themselves to me as (sorry, shocking gramma/er!) unless they tell me otherwise.
I agree, Cazzesman, that bosses need a degree of separation ... just not sure I've seen it that often in AFL clubs recently & am really impressed for some undefined reason that Brett is doing it.

Was interested in the Kernahan interview on 3AW yesterday. He made it very clear that Ratten had been given a 2 year deal with certain criteria to has to be met in that period.

Didn't specify what that was but I would assume development of the kids and a bit of pride (and arrogance) back in the Carlton jumper would be among them.

thats a great pickup on ratts' language. it does show that while he has the passion and love for the club - see his barracking in the coaches box - he is professional enough to recognise that he needs to place a barrier between his personal and professional relationships with the players, which will help when he needs to give them a rocket.

Yes an interesting approach. The berating of players and the firey speech are over rated and outdated approaches, especially at the top level. Mind you it shouldn't happen at any level really. Reminds me of an old story about a little boy who had been berated by his school Principal. When asked by his mother about what the Principal said, he didn't know but he did know that the Principal had big hairs in his nose!

FWIW.

Welcome Illy...I think you will find that most (if not all) coaches, CEOs, Football Managers etc refer to the players by their proper names. As has been pointed out, it's that managerial separation coming into play.
