Quote:
WAYNE Harmes is hardly your regular former league star given he now admits during his 169-game Carlton career he remained a Richmond supporter, that despite winning three premierships with the Blues "I was an employee of the Carlton Football Club and that's all"...

Quote:
...Despite Harmes' dislike of what is happening to footy at the elite level he will keep a watchful eye on the MCG next Saturday when Carlton takes on Richmond. Will he be barracking for the Tigers? "Of course," said Harmes. "Richmond is my team. In fact as a kid I despised the Blues. Funny how things turned out isn't it."

Was my all time favourite player

Yeah this came up back on TBV IIRC. I've also read David Schwarz is a Hawthorn supporter having grown up in the hawks cheer squad.

Mixed feelings though isn't it.

He was one of my favourite players.

You have to admire anyone who is genuinly passionate about a club.

You also have to admire the way he went about his footy if his heart truly was not a part of the club. He never shirked an issue on the field for the Blues.

If anything, it makes the Bichmond fans spew harder, not us.

Bit like mandy playing for Carlton, isn't it?

We know she'd give her best, despite supporting, well, the worst. :-D

This is becoming predictable. Every year Carl v Rich they dredge this story up. Old news. Harmes dislike of the footy is even older news.

Queue the '79 GF thanks.

I can understand why he supports Richmond - it is a family thing for him.
Len Smith coached Richmond and who you love as a kid usually is your club of choice.

However, he played for Carlton, he excelled for Carlton and he is one of the main reasons I am a Carlton supporter. Still my favourite player - even if he supported North Albury, Wentworth, Richmond, Swan Districts or any other club over and above Carlton.

Imagine if Paul McCartney said his favourite band over and above The Beatles was the Beach Boys or the Rolling Stones or whoever, it still doesn't change the fact that his legacy was in the Beatles.

Harmesy's favourite club may be Richmond - but he played for Carlton. End of story.

I'm glad I didn't know about that when I put his name & # on the back of my duffle coat back in 1978.

Goddard loves Carlton, Kouta loves Collingwood, Murph loves North etc....I'm sure he didn't feel like a Richmond supporter when he blanketed KB in 1982GF.

I'm sure as a professional sportswoman I would give my best. And I'm sure the rest of the girls playing there would make me feel very welcome. :P

:? Richmond supporter :!: The night the vote of no confidence was passed against John Elliot in 2002, I saw Wayne Harmes there with a Visy jacket on. You've got to be kidding me!

The Newman family, Chris included (deep down) are Carlton through and through, especially his grandma.
Georgie Bissett, a Footscray legend, barracks for Essendon*.
Phil Carman always wanted to play for Carlton.
None of which matters. What does matter is the Blues beating the Tigers this week.

who cares who he supported, he was part of winning premierships for us, that's all that matters ...

in the bigger scheme of things and time ....the Club is bigger than any player

A GREAT servant of the CFC!!

Always put in 100%.

3 Premierships for the Blues...that's all I wanted from him.

Always will be a Harmes supporter for all the joy he gave me. I never will be a Harmes Tigers supporter.

Big difference.

PS: I now understand why he snotted a few and broke a few bones of upcoming Carlton players during the preseason intra club games. If only we knew that back then. Doesn't matter now.
