Should guns be banned because people get shot by people holding them?
Someone mentioned Souths in Sydney have removed pokies, one would think thats pretty noble and moral.
Why then does the club still receive millions of dollars of grants from the souths juniors? souths juniors is a massive pokie venue.
Why have they left the door open to getting the licence back.
Huge Publicity stunt thats why.
I work in a club in QLD we have 100 pokies, QLD office of Gaming Regulation has just finished a public survey where problem gambling has reduced by around 2% in 2008 from 2003. There are 98.55% of the population that dont have a problem with pokies.
Clubs also pour millions and millions of dollars in to the communities supporting junior sports, schools, and various community groups.
Who is going to pick up the tab for that when the Govt succeed and kill off the clubs?
Flowering mass hysteria.
Pokies are a legitimate profit area, if managed properly are an integral part of a licensed business.
It's not the same thing, people who are struggling are tempted to gamble because they think they will eventually win just like the lotto, but lose 95% of the time and it causes a mess.
I reckon it's poor form having them more then drinking,at least the drinker who is drinking to his crappy life may enjoy a drink but not lose his weeks pay and be in debt to lots of Thousands because he reckon this time he will win.
People who are all for it,care how much revenue they get from it. It probably doesn't effect someone who has several games playing it if they earning big dollars and has 3 houses.
