OK...Thank Christ it's out - that's all I can say! I knew about this back in late March - but given you sign all the probity and confidentiality statements - I wasn't able to say anything and alas, still can't elaborate on much - even though I have since left the ACCC. I wasn't privy to much of the second vendetta - I don't understand Jewish grudges and so will leave that to others to comment on - but I can say that the powers that be were very happy at the first outcome...to the point where the cheque for $36 million was paraded around the office like some newborn child. It was signed by King Richard himself - yet came from the 'Visy Board'.

My personal opinion is that this is like a storm in a teacup. Visy will still face the civil action from the other companies who paid too much for their cardboard. That's a big whack - they were guilty and they'll pay the price. But asking if you remember a meeting in a Richmond pub and what was discussed 3 years after it occurred while having treatment for prostate cancer...I don't think this allegation will hold too much water. If guilty - a fine and a slap on the wrists seems appropriate - jail will not be an option for one of Australia's largest ever philanthropists. The succession plan will take place as planned - given the industry I'm now in - I'll have a chat to Harold Mitchell and see what I can find out.

People need to step back from the ridiculous, vociferous media hunt that has spawned on the back of this and take stock – these are just charges at this point and yet to be proved in a court of law. The AFL media have persisted with this ridiculous notion that everyone associated with this game needs to be on verge of sainthood and repeatedly bleat from their ivory tower about anyone they perceive as not being an angel! The club and Richard need to stand firm and let this run its course. Any concession now by us or Richard is a sign of weakness and lack of composure

The charge relates to what was said between 2 people a number of years ago.
Very much one persons word against another!

As for Samuel and his role at the ACCC?.

It would be easy to suggest a degree of vindictiveness from the ex AFL Commissioner and Essendon* man in all of this.

We are now hearing the old cheating in 1993-1995 story coming out.No word of the involvement of Samuels chum Evans , the one time leader of another serial rorting Club. That also ignores the moratorium for ALL clubs at the time!

Evans and Essendon*( including supporters such as Smith) conveniently forgot this.

Perhaps some good investigative reporter should ask David Shaw the former Essendon* Committeeman about his role as the fall guy at the time?

The reality of it is that he really doesn't care about the footy. If he has a team it's the Dees. There was always a story that went around that while he was an AFL commissioner he'd have the headphones on at the footy. People around him presumed he was plugged in to the 3LO call - when he was actually tuned in to the Opera.

Look - he's not a bad bloke. There are a lot worse. He's very approachable, easy to talk to and is extremely intelligent. But so is Richard Pratt....however in this life - Richard is Robin Hood...Samuel is the Sheriff of Nottingham
