Pagan = The Lost Years of the Carlton Football Club
The players during that period that he burned are Carlton's own "Stolen Generation".
Disagree, GH.
Look at other clubs who have had lists with high draft picks. St Kilda is the obvious comparison.
Now, there is a club which has burnt out good young players in some mad rush to use them to plug gaps you could drive a road train through.
In contrast, Pagan brought on the kids slowly, and exposed them in a number of ways to senior AFL footy. This exposure is actually starting to reap some rewards, with GIBBS really finding his feet, Murph doing magical things, and others like JR and Bower really finding their place.
I'm not saying that Pagan was good for the club in the period he was here, but I don't think it can be reasonably argued that he "burnt" players.
I just can't agree with any of that.
Gibbs and Murph were always going to be stars, it's the Grigg, Bower, Russel, Jamo etc players that need the support that Pagan was so clearly lacking. I would bet that Ratts has been to more Bullants games since being assistant and head coach than the 5 odd years that Pagan was here.
You need to support and encourage young kids to help them find their feet and learn the craft in the big time. Untill Ratts became head coach players like Russel and Bower were to scared and timid to play to their potential and were dragged everytime they make a mistake rather than given the oppertunity to make amends, this is what killed the development of our kids along with Pagan not even knowing half the names of the kids that he didn't rate.
I agree with what you say, that Pagan wasn't a supporter of some of the "fringe" type players who need some extra motivation/reassurance/guidance, but we're talking about burning players, and I don't think that not rating players is the same thing.
Like I said, look at how the young high-draft players St Kilda got have been burnt by a desperate coach and administration, and compare that to how Murph and Gibbs were eased into their roles. Gibbs especially.
