There's a lot of that article which is complete crap.

You have to remember though, that Richard Hinds is Fairfax's token Sydney-based AFL writer, and their "Swan's view" on the AFL. Anything he writes is aimed at a Sydney Morning Herald audience rather than a The Age one.

We have absolutely no reason to thank the AFL for anything.

Thank the members, who in our darkest times drove the club to record levels of membership.

Thank the members who ousted a board who were old, stale, and were caught in the salary cap net.

Thank the members who didn't accept Smorgon's doomsday chronicale "We are the next Fitzroy" headlines. And voted him out.

Thank the coterie groups who dug in hard and helped when the club was given a direction by a leader.

Thank that leader, Richard Pratt. There's a whole thread on that.

To Greg Swann who got the club back to a position of financial strength with more of a vision than simply taking money from Pratt and accepting donations.

Thank the member-elected board for removing the stale old coaching methods of a pigheaded 1990s coach. Someone who wouldn't drag a gameplan into the 21st century, and who couldn't get the players to believe in him.

And thank the players. Many weren't up to it. They still wore the navy blue jumper. They still gave us moments of joy in hours of darkness.

But the club is bigger than any of these individuals. The club went from one scoffed at by Jason Akermanis when deciding which victorian club to return to ("anyone but carlton"), into one chosen by Chris Judd as his only option.

And not one skerrick of thanks for that goes to the flowering AFL

Who do i believe Pratt himself or a guy who posts on fansites?

When Pratt tells me that he lied and that Sticks had nothing to do with him getting onboard then i will believe Synbad.

Do you think Jabba and the commission, at the time, think 'raping' us would help our cause, later to then supposedly rescue us through informal talks with Pratt (puuuuulease).....

this suggestion will sure rile many of us here on TC, none more than our friend, AGRO - enter stage right, left even....

Duplicitous - went back on his word about salary cap penalties - made decisions about salary cap infraction before he got Woods report - tried to permanently maim our club both by being too harsh in financial and draft penalties - when club financially crippled it asked for extra AFL ASSISTANCE - he wouldnt give it - gave us a loan unlike assistance given to Kangas Dogs and Melbourne which was not repayable-

Forced us to have home games at Telstra ie not schedule us at MCG even if we had it as home ground

- maintain the rage this guy has nothing to do with our revival

Well I have thought of something we should thank the AFL and AndyD for.

We learnt the hard way that any rebuilding of the club had to come from within. We couldn't rely on anyone else. It must us harder and more determined to rise again into the dominant AFL power.

I still won't thank the flower though

This guy is a muppet, didn't get past the first 2/3 of the first page when he said we were struggling for membership. Besides 1 year when it dropped below the previous we've had record memberships every year.

Well researched dropkick

Thank the AFL  Is that a joke or what :?

You are kidding, R Hinds, aren't you?! Thank Jabba, for what exactly?! His vindictive response to our salary breaches (because of his intense dislike of Big Jack); the lack of consistency to similar salary cap breaches performed by other clubs (namely St.Kilda and Richmond); and Jabba's sycophantic behaviour once Dick came on the scene- "No, Carlton did not tank" (if it was Smorgon at the helm, there would have been a Spanish Inquisition happening).

No, R Hinds, why don't you write a piece on how the AFL keep on propping up the Sydney FC for the sake of a "national competition" and the bigger slice of the TV market in Australia, thus ensuring Jabba get an even bigger salary!

Its to be expected, revisionist nonsense like this.

Trying to spin things in a way that makes the arch villans of the piece look angelic.

Ive never gotten over the way we were shafted and rather than hide the truth of the matter, for me, drivel like this only stirs up bitter memories.

syc·o·phant : A self-seeking, servile flatterer; fawning parasite.
