find this hard to believe, I wonder how they arrive at these figures, Richmond have many more supporters then listed here for a start

Probably but if you were one of them would you own up to it?

I assume they are just the morgan figures that come out every year.

They are based on door to door market research they do, there is a footy support question and they just extrapolate their results to the general population in much the same way a pollster does.

Well if its based on door to door surveys, most Collingwood fans are unemployed dole bludgers who are at home during the day so of course they recorded the most supporters... :P

its a morgan poll done annually , and based on the answers of a few thousand people , similiar to television ratings , and electoral polls, they are only ever an indication but give a fair picture .

The scum and the filth both have 200k more supporters that we do. Un-flowering-acceptable!

Richmond and Hawthorn would surely have to have way more supporters than that.

Bloody good effort for the Hawks to have over 40K members from 309K Aus wide.

But you have to take those figures with a grain of salt, i mean Sydney have half the Australian population as supporters if you go by a Roy Morgan poll

Surveys of this nature are absolute dribble. To suggest that these numbers are even close to correct, is an insult to the intelligence of the supporting public!

Remember the survey that stated that the Swans had over a million supporters and were the most popular team in the comp and that the Brions had close to the same support? A close business associate of mine who follows Rugby League was approached at the QVB centre and asked would he answer some sports questions. He agreed and this is the crap he was asked:

Do you follow the AFL?
Answer: No.

If you did, would you be more likely to support the local team or would you support a team from Interstate?
Answer: A local Team.

That means you would support the Sydney Swans in that case?
Answer: Who are they?

Anyway you got the gist of the concocted method of the survey.

I have been to games at Carrarra and the Gabba particularly before Fitzroy and the Yogi Bears were recast as the Brions, and the visiting Victorian club supporters matched the local yokels. In fact about 7 years ago at the Gabba, Carlton supporters far outnumbered the Brisbane supporters. It was sold out within minutes of the tickets being available and there were hundreds of Blue clad supporters milling around the entrances on game day trying to get tickets.

We all know about the solid support we have in South Aussie, West Aussie and Taswegia, but let me tell ya, Carlton is huge up here too and is still one of the biggest supported AFL clubs in the world. We might be a bit shy of the claimed Colliwobble numbers, but to suggest that the Scum have more supporters than us is laughable!

Brizzy, the survey you described does not sound at all like the Morgan survey. The morgan survey is massive in terms of the number of questions they ask, the main purpose of their survey is for general data for marketing purposes for Australian companies.

The AFL question is just one amongst many. They extrapolate these numbers for AFL mainly as a little media driven sideshow.

These results are purely illustrative and as the sydney and brisbane data indicates the definition of support is spurious for the non-AFL states, this survey obviously catches a lot of League and Union fans just ticking a box for an AFL question.

Still, it is a more relevant comparison for the Victorian teams though. I would never completely dismiss this aspect of it, or at the same time give it too much creedence.

i think the figures a more accurate than many suggest , year after year the Herald sun polls (yearly surveys) have pretty much had Essendon* , collingwood and carlton as 1, 2 and 3 and bulldogs, north and melbourne as bottom 3, although numbers cannot be truely accurate, the fact is Essendon* and Collingwood have gained some distance on Carlton, Essendon* more since there move to the G in the 90's, but all said and done Carltons figures are still super impressive and in years to come our numbers will surge, as Have Geelongs in overtaking the "Tetley Tigers mob"

i fail to understand how these figures can be accurate too. how would these people know i'm a carlton supporter for example? i dont know of anyone else who has ever told who they barrack for to an organization to make stats on it. the only important number is members, i could not give a rats how many people there are who act like they follow a team, but do nothing to support them.

Same survey came out last year and siad something like 30% of one clubs supporters were likely to be gay... or something like that. As you say, just a media driven sideshow, but the people lap it up.
