Flicking through the Aussie Disposals winter catalogue, and saw that they're stocking a new line: the classic duffel coat.

Anyone going to revisit their youth and create a new duffel coat for the 21st century - complete with badges, a number on the back (and name), patches, and whatever else you can buy at the Carlton shop to sew onto it.

Probably a bit hot for Telstra Dome, but perfect for those winter games at the MCG.

My duffelcoat had Peter "4" Bosustow on the back.

I thought they stopped making these when the Duffelbeast became extinct? :)

I still have most of my badges somewhere too, Mark McClure, Rod Ashman, Bruce Doull, Mike Fitzpatrick, The Dominator etc. My old Blues scarf (the one that has the word "Blues" on every second stripe, as opposed to the later ones that have it about every third stripe - does anyone know what i'm talking about here?) was buried with my Nana about three years ago. These were the things that made me love Carlton in the first place - the tribalism, and the solidarity and pride in our team colours as well as the ornaments that symbolise these things.

I thought they stopped making these when the Duffelbeast became extinct?

Yeah, I hadn't seen one for years - but Aussie Disposals have come to the rescue. What I don't know is if they've got them in navy blue - the one in the catalogue looks black.

Maybe if Dockers fans are lucky, they'll bring one out in purple.

Purple. Jesus. Purple isn't a footy colour. Basketball maybe. But footy... no.

for mine, had a fair swag of those badges on the front as well. Perfect for keeping warm whilst waiting for that tram back to the station.

I got a Carlton showbag from the Melb Show when I was about 11 that had a bunch of patches and stuff in it to sew on my duffel coat. Mum never got around to it though

Remember the smell from a new one when it rained? Mum used to hand wash mine in hot water with eucalyptus oil...nothing like a good wiff of meat pie, beer and eucalyptus oil in the outer.

A mate of mine who designs clothes and has his own clothing line in the city came across some old WW2 army coats in Germany and Belgium last year. They're just like the old duffel coat but he made some slight alterations, boiled them and is selling them for $350...I'm very tempted to get one in Navy Blue and put the old 'ALEX 25 JESAULENKO' on the back...

I had

WAYNE
7
JOHNSTON

on mine.

I also had a 4 for Buzz on one shoulder and a 9 for Kenny on the other.

14 for Ashman on the left pocket and 11 for Doully on the right.

There was a 37 at the top on the back too (above the ridge).

Must have been at least 40 sew-on Cash's labels all over the friggin thing. My poor mother.

Badges galore.

Oh - and can't forget the "rosette"... :-D

I reckon there were weeks when I went to the footy as excited about what merchandise I was going to buy as I was about the game (which we'd probably win anyway).

This has officially become the old-people's thread.

Gen Y may have full employment and the interweb, but they've never known the duffel coat.
