Big raps for Ratts...

http://www.realfooty.com.au/news/news/p ... ntentSwap2

Quote:
"I think it's uncanny how similar Brett Ratten is to Mark Williams. I think in time he'll end up being the best coach that I've ever had," Stevens says of his fourth, and youngest, football chief.

"I've learnt as much off Ratts in the last 12 months, even when he was an assistant coach, as I have in my whole career."

"You go, 'This is a bloke that I want to play for and I want to go into war with'. If I was to go into war, I'd want Brett Ratten standing next to me . . . it's been a long time since we've had that at the Carlton footy club."

This article certainly gives an insight into Nick Steven's personality.

Great article, he is also featured in the Herald Sun with Mike Sheehan.

He seems well respected by the boys at the club so heres hoping they play out of their skins tonight for him and Fev.

GO BLUES!!!!

The age write up far better than the negative dribble Mike Sheehan focused on in his.

Some of his quotes were identical. Hard to Believe that Mike and Sam weren't sitting in at the same interview.

Stevens is a wonderful footballer and was great against the WCE, but I don't rate him that highly after hearing about the drinking and the comments about missing out on the captaincy. The Stevens in the Fevola-Stevens tribute video looks nothing like the player we've watched for the last two to three seasons. But we're supposed to buy his explanation that the weight issues are due to genetics and not having the right attitude to training and preparation. His attitude rubbed off on a young player who has only had made the most of his talents this year because he used to get smashed every week.

And people wonder why Judd got the captaincy ahead of a Carlton player.

That attitude sums up the Pagan era when everyone was to blame for our fall from from grace.

I hope Nick read the excellent article about Nathan Foley and learnt a thing or two about preparation and hard work from a player who was selected in the rookie draft.

http://www.realfooty.com.au/news/news/e ... ntentSwap1

Stevens would be an AA player, Captain and a Best and Fairest if he had Foley's or Carrazzo's attitude.

Whinger.

The Ratten comment about Judd getting the captaincy due to him being a premiership Captain sounds like lip service.

Pretty sure Foley is 5 years his junior without the knee niggles.

On top of that, 12 months out of the game at his age has a big say on his conditioning. Let's see how he's travelling next season. At this stage he gets a pass for his level of performance from me, all things considered.

Jim, his excuses for his weight problems are laughable. I can understand him not being ripped when coming back because weights wouldn't have been a smart idea when coming back from the injury he had.

However, he was able to fully run by August last year. How does that explain the state of his fatness 2 weeks before the start of the season

What worries me is in that article he said the coaches never had a problem with it :? Startling to say the least.

Great to read Stevens speaking his mind and shoving it up the wankers of this world. The tools must be spewing he's playing and back to playing well. Suffer I say.

Rapt that Nick now sees what he needs to do to be considered in the elite, and is doing it.

Disappointed it's taken this long. And has cost us.

We've seen what a great influence a professional like Judd has had on our club - amongst other changes - in the space of months.

Imagine if players like Lance and Stevo had displayed similar professionalism over the past 4 years. Some of our kids might just be a little further ahead of where they are.

Gee he's playing good footy now though.

Or they might not. It's a futile line of argument because it is impossible to prove either way, and ultimately extremely insignificant.

I didn't take them to be excuses for weight problems, merely the badgering in papers when one photo made him look a bit plump (fun word).

He had a knee injury (infection) and a neck strain, and resultantly couldn't run or train. This is well documented.

That appears to have been the Denis Pagan culture; he felt had to turn a blind eye to a few things on and off the field in order to retain talent. I can understand a born and bred footballer sinking a few more beers when it looks like his team won't be getting over the opposition most weekends.

It's highly debatable whether or not a change in Nick's actions would have led the club to long-term success any faster given Pagan's antics and that of those around him (Smorgon, Collins, etc).

I am glad that Nick sees us challenging within the next few years, and that he is enjoying his footy and the club.

I think that those are the positives to take out of the article.

As for his comments about the captaincy etc, to be honest I wish he hadn't gone there but best left alone. will hold my tongue and focus on the positives in the article.

All he said about the captaincy was that he was pissed off when first told and then after 24 hours was fine. I am comfortable with what he said and shows he loves the club and wants to be captain.

The most interesting part of the article to me was that previously a player was judged by the number of possessions they had, which pretty much confirms what a lot of us thought especially when 90% of the times at kick-ins after a point the kicker would kick it to himself and play on for a cheap stat. Now the players are judged by the 1%.

The partying was nothing new as this was raised in another article last year from memory.

Futile to suggest that strong leadership from Lance, Stevo etc over the last 4 years might have seen us as a club and our junior development in a better position?

Futile?

I think you'd get more people padding up to defend the view that good leadership increases the odds of success and of getting the most out of those around you... in most walks of life verbs.

You're right about one thing. We'll never know.

But about leadership as a line of argument being extremely insignificant? Don't know you're right about that...
