Were the tops of our very first guernseys yellow or orange? When we have heritage week the tops have been yellow but i was sure they were orange originally?

The image in bluesum has it as yellow.

The yokes were made from chamois.

So initially they would have looked quite yellow but as they aged they would have turned an orange/brown colour.

That's bizarre!

They obvoiusly needed their "Blue" laundry "Bags" to be the type you could throw in the wash to resist fading!

What Jars says is true.....the white chamois turned a yellowish colour.

Orange was our earliest colour according to some sources.

Lionel Frost, in his history of the club, notes earlier uniforms than the 1887 pic posted by Warby. Players were in "a rough assortment of clothes, but usually in cricket whites". Coloured caps showed which side you were on. Carlton wore orange, then orange and blue and adopted dark navy blue in 1871. In 1873 a blue jacket and kickerbockers with grey socks was the uniform.

100 Years of Football also mentions the orange caps then orange and blue.

According to "The Clubs" our captain wore a dark blue cap in the 1871 Challenge Cup. It also says we wore "tight-fitting blue dungaree jackets".

Yep.....I just answered in respect to the chamois guernsey.

In the 1860's era....Clubs wore different colour Caps to distinguish different teams.....we adopted Orange Caps because of our largely Protestant background.....however; this colour clashed with South Yarra; so Carlton added a blue band to the Orange Cap.

We wore all blue caps from 1871; and some players started wearing all Navy shirts as well etc. etc.
