What happen was after Matthew Penny was drafted by Carlton as a third round pick 43 in the 1993 pre season draft was allocated number 37, he was listed under this number between Round 1 and 11, but didn’t play a reserve game and stayed at Box Hill. In Round 12 Haami Williams from Geelong was listed in this number after being drafted by Carlton as a second round pick in the mid season draft at pick 19 and played 11 reserve games for 3 goals in the remainder of that season, he had also played for the Geelong reserves in their win against Carlton in Round 11.
Another example is number 40 during the 1990 season when Gerard Butts wore this number during 6 reserve games for 2 goals between Round 1 and 11 and in Round 12 and 13 it was allocated to an under 19 player in Anthony Koutoufides (who didn’t wear this number in any reserve games, but later during the season wore number 46 in 4 reserve games), after the mid season draft Carlton’s first round pick number 9 was Craig Cross an 1989 ex Richmond reserve player and was playing with the Burnie Hawks was allocated this number and played 5 reserve games for 7 goals between Round 14 and 21. In Round 22 Brett Ratten wore this number in his senior debut against Fitzroy and also used this number in his two reserve finals, including the 1990 premiership victory over Melbourne.
Thanks for that info.I never knew Gerard Butts continued in 1990. I thought he must have been delisted and Brett Ratten took over. That's great info on Craig Cross getting the number.I presume he left the club after that season.
I noticed David Glascott got picked up in the Mid Season draft in 1992 did he retire and decided to continue?
The mid season draft confused the team list. It would great to find out the other players allocated numbers who never played a game but was selected in the drafts from 1987-1993. I think they part of the Carlton history, being they were drafted more then just coming from all those zones or just rolling up like the old days.
