Why was the other Number 2 wearing J Russell delisted after only about a dozen games, Jarusa?

In economic terms the 'opportunity cost' of keeping Russel on the list is not great. De-list him and we get to pick an extra guy at pick 70 - big deal.

However he is improving and methinks that if he hadn't kicked into the man on the mark and instead scored a goal with that kick on saturday, we'd all be saying that russel played quite well and is starting to show good signs - it certainly is a game of inches.

Yeah too slow J, did okay at the Pies, but a wet tracker lacking in skill. Copped a nasty elbow from Keogh in 79. Bit like that C'wood guy who won the Anzac medal and then went to the Saints and was delisted, what was his name?

Still in those days you didn't have to delist anyone. You could have a 100 on your list if you wanted. How long would Scotty Howell stay on the list these days, yet he played in a premiership.

PS I think J Russell is improving, very promising on the weekend. I'll forgive him a few errors when he brings intensity and tackling to his game as he did.

Agree with Gerry about being the player least likely to get a game with the quicker skilled mids that we had at the time. Those trying to compare him with JR well the similarities only stop at Russell. JR is quicker but RO was harder at the ball.

he should have been sacked last year!!!!

This is a guy who wanted to go back home, no one wanted him so he stayed at a club who didnt have any better. NOW WE DO!

He doesnt bring anything to the tabel, no speed, cant tackle, cant kick, cant handball, cant tag. What is the guys purpose in our team when we are suppose to me moving forward.

Id take Jackson or Armfield over him any day.

Houlihan is the one I would look at first before Russell. Houlihan has had a good innings at the club. Time he either hangs up the boots at AFL level or is traded. This should be his last year at Carlton. When did he start at the Blues? 2000 or therabouts? That is a long innings. Lot longer than what most players get.

Besides, I don't want another 200 game player at the club who isn't part of a premiership team.

I totally agree on the Houla front, time to be traded for whatever we can get. started in 2001 and with his experience should be leading from the front but instead he is pulling out of contests, still can lay a tackel and just doesnt do enough.

any draft picks for him what be great for him considering all the good picks will be going to the GC and West Sydney as of 2010

Russell has an issue with turnovers, he kills team momentum on a regular basis. He had 5 clangers out of 16 disposals last week. This week the kick into the man on the mark contributed to changing the flow of the game, another week it was the kick to the opposition when we were attacking ... all his turnovers are hurting us as the team is caught moving forward. You can swallow turnovers by a player that is damaging but it's harder with a player who's not hurting the opposition at all. The opposition know it and play off him at every opportunity ... probably the reason he gets the stats he does.

Not sure whether it's a confidence issue or lack of ability to cope at the AFL level but as much as people love him, he's not doing the Seniors any favours at the moment. He's disciplined and tackling hard but Bentick does that too.

The only argument to keep him in the side is there's nobody really pushing up. Jacko is not the answer until he starts doing the team things. Was at the Bullies game and Teaguey was spot on to single him out. We don't want to see the likes of Bentick and Wiggo being promoted. Ando would be the only option to replace him but I'd rather seem him in for Bentick ... unfortunately Ando isn't fit.

So he stays in until Banno, Hads, or Ando are fit enough to play but if we want to win games rather than simply develop JR then he should be dropped for any of those 3.

I don't know why people worry so much about the posters who atack his charachter. Obviously they're F__ wits and don't deserve to be listened to.

However, he plays professional football and we are the shareholders in the club. We have the right to critique a player as we see them in the position of employment. His performance is open for scrutiny every week just as Acklands is (he's got family, too  )

I told the Dutchess 2 years ago that Russell would be one of the most marketable players in the comp  - speed, looks, physique, skill   She now laughs when she sees me tearing out my hair strand by strand.

I wouldn't sack him at years end, but I wouldn't be hanging him out there to dry and attracting criticism either. 5 clangers is a damning stat, but I reckon there was another 3 where he gave it to a player under the hammer, which could also be classified as a clanger.

Look we overpaid for him originally, but he's not in the bottom five of our list and I suspect his wage hasn't gone up dramatically from his original contract (if at all).

It's simple economics - we persist until we (he) find (finds) something better.

Looking back now, there weren't many winners in that draft.

Fair comment.....hasnt performed like a top ten pick but isnt the worst player going around and has improved.
I have been critical of his attack on the footy and putting in the short steps but he has improved in this area as well as putting on some more kgs and being one of our better tacklers.

His decision making and disposal are his main areas of concern......not a great kick for goal but a lot of good players ie Rob Harvey have not been either.....Darren Pfeiffer's disposal also isnt fantastic but most of us like the way he goes about it...

Like Jimmae said until we get something better we need to persist with him......
Ryan Jackson is a good colt but hasnt done enough to suggest he is a fixture on our list either and you would be splitting hairs picking one over the other IMHO....
