..listen, in regards to the whole giddy up friday deal, there should be no wishywashy crap.. ..either the govt comes out of the christian closet and makes a stand, or goes the whole hog of saying it's a non-religious govt and then actually being a non-religious govt.. ..too much 'old britannia' thinking holding us back.. ..there's no real need for any religious holidays, full stop.. ..scrap the lot, a boss can't legally force you to work on a religious holiday anyway, since yer can't discriminate against religion.. ..or, make a show of pretty much recognising and celebrating public holidays for all the other religions floating around the country..

We are still a Christain country

So which country are the buddhists, muslims, jews, zoroastrians, confucians, fsm worshippers etc supposed to belong to?

Or aetheists for that matter.

Funny how the only people who ever say "we're a christian country" are christians...

You missed my point I am not but my wife and kids are - I find any religion hard fathom - I just say I am to fire up Synbad in Stuff

But its not a problem for me. as im not Catholic,, and my easter is on this weekend not the weekend that the game is proposed on...

I just see a wrecking ball.. knocking over everything for money....
And i see people spending less and less time with their families in a society thats all about McDonalds fast food.. video computer games and alot of bored people who need to force others to work on a day they want as a holiday to be entertained...

Its pitifully depthless really...

Synbad

Gronja Polla! (Not sure of the spelling but I think you will now what I am saying given you are greek I assume?

Christos Anesti :)

I think we should legislate that all families must spend a day together not eating Mcdonalds.

I'm a Christian, and I couldn't give a stuff about what people do on Good Friday. In fact I rarely hear practising Christians who are all that concerned about it. It's usually the wider culture who thinks we care for some reason.

i dont understand the less family time argument - it was dragged out last time this debate raged on.

what if going to the football is a family event for some families?

I think they're saying that the bar staff, pie sellers, gate staff, security, audio/visual, radio commentary, club staff, players, etc, etc might want a day off to spend with the family.

Do you reckon that Carlton and whoever would have to pay double the match fee for playing on a public holiday?... I would like to think common sense would prevail, but reading through this, it seems that unless there are a specific set of instructions, people aren't able to make decisions.

that's a fair point, double pay means half the profit...

If it was a night match you would get the same amount of exposure as a Friday night game....Almost the same as a twighlight game perhaps..

I think the reason the Anzac day game is so succesfull is because it's played during the day........That's when the good Friday game would have to be played for the best exposure.....

For me, Anzac day is far more significant day than good friday

Interesting story. The 1966 Grand Final fell on Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement), the holiest day in the Jewish calender. Ian Synman was playing for St Kilda at the time. Being Jewish, he was conflicted as to weather to play or not.

He went to see his Rabbi, who told him that as this was the pinnacle of his 'profession' (even though it wasn't his full time job), and that it was what he had been striving to achieve all his life, that he should play.

Bachar Houli had the same conflict when it came to the draft camp a couple of years back, as it fell during Ramadan. He spoke to his Imam, who (IIRC) told him to make the most of his talents, as they were gifted to him by God, and if it meant breaking the fast to do that to stay hydrated and have the energy to play and train, then that was also part of God's plan.

So, religion and common sense can live side by side....

Good Friday it is. Then it's settled.

We'll take it.

I want Anzac Day to be a Carlton Day. Because it's not, I believe the MCG game should be rotated between clubs in Melbourne.

I can't see why scum and filth have the lights on them for a week exclusively.

So, id Good Friday evening is available for an exclusive game day for Carlton and whoever(?), then we'll take it!

Nah.. it has to have some tradition attached...has to be Tiggers, scum, filth...the rest of the Melbourne teams are traditional losers in one way or another.

Saints (flybynight), Hawks (80's team), Dees (gawn), Dogs (nice)...there's no history of significance other than the '87 GF when Rhys demolished Brereton.
