I'm pretty sure we've been over this ground before. As for me - I'm a Catholic and I don't oppose the footy being played on Good Friday. I'd still go to Church on Good Friday morning and I'd go to the footy later in the afternoon. We normally go away on this weekend anyway - which made the Thursday night match ideal for us - but no objection from me.

Where is it written that thou shalt not 'celebrate' Good Friday with a game of footy? I can't see why sport and a Christian celebration must be deemed mutually exclusive.

The fact that you are asking where does it say that you cannot celebrate GF with a game of footy indicates that the significance of GF is lost on you because no-one celebrates GF.

If Carlton were to play on Good Friday I'd celebrate.

I know I shouldn't but......................:-D

The emphasis placed on 'celebrate' was largely used to point out that the term can mean many different things to many different people. For those not of a religious bent, it's quite frankly just another day - the fact that it's a public holiday is moot.

I'm still to hear one particularly compelling reason as to why football shouldn't be played on the evening of Good Friday. Make it a night game, put a portion of the gate toward the Royal Children's Hospital appeal or something, and there'd be 80,000+ on hand to 'celebrate' what's important to them. I fail to see how this could offend those of a Christian leaning.

what if going to the football is a family event for some families?

I think they're saying that the bar staff, pie sellers, gate staff, security, audio/visual, radio commentary, club staff, players, etc, etc might want a day off to spend with the family.

Do you reckon that Carlton and whoever would have to pay double the match fee for playing on a public holiday?... I would like to think common sense would prevail, but reading through this, it seems that unless there are a specific set of instructions, people aren't able to make decisions.

NMW is a little cranky to be going to the ANZAC Day game tomorrow because she misses out on a full day's work at double time.

Do players get paid double time for playing on Queen's Birthday?

Lets just do it and take the risk.

If we happen to piss off the wrong God then there will be a plague or something.

If there is no plague everything should be fine.

Or aetheists for that matter.

Funny how the only people who ever say "we're a christian country" are christians...

You missed my point I am not but my wife and kids are - I find any religion hard fathom - I just say I am to fire up Synbad in Stuff

But its not a problem for me. as im not Catholic,, and my easter is on this weekend not the weekend that the game is proposed on...

I just see a wrecking ball.. knocking over everything for money....
And i see people spending less and less time with their families in a society thats all about McDonalds fast food.. video computer games and alot of bored people who need to force others to work on a day they want as a holiday to be entertained...

Its pitifully depthless really...

It's seems very double standard.

The argument is that we want the Good Friday because it's not very relevant to certain groups.

But then why do we want Good Friday? Because it is recognized as a Holy Day which is celebrated by Christians and Catholics.

Simply, we'd be cashing in on this Holy day. I don't think that's quite the right thing to do.

In line with the "CJ is JC" photo doing the rounds currently, how about a WC game on Good Friday and a Carlton game on Easter Sunday?

We want it because we can get a good crowd and make a 'tradition' out of it, a good crowd would justify the reasoning that most people don't go to church, in fact most are bored shitless on good friday (aka - boring friday).

As the good Dr said, church in the morning (if u are that way inclined) and footy later.

I am more effected by the fact that I usually go away for easter

Back to the big issue here.

I thought Swann said it was all over for the insipid white thing!

Weak.
