Spot on...Good Friday isn't even a holiday in Italy ! Easter Sunday is far more significant. Lets stop footy on Easter Sunday...

Wasn't there some kind of Easter last weekend as well... or is it this weekend?

Better scrap footy altogether just to be safe.

Blues on Good Friday starting 2009, you know it makes sense.

all three of them?

Interesting story. The 1966 Grand Final fell on Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement), the holiest day in the Jewish calender. Ian Synman was playing for St Kilda at the time. Being Jewish, he was conflicted as to weather to play or not.

He went to see his Rabbi, who told him that as this was the pinnacle of his 'profession' (even though it wasn't his full time job), and that it was what he had been striving to achieve all his life, that he should play.

If my memory serves me correctly, Daniel Bradshaw chose to miss a final (against Carlton) for Brisbane because his wife was giving birth.

As I see it, different people have different conflicts, and have to make choices around them. We can't cater for everyone. Given that we now recognise Australia to be multi-cultural and multi-religious, and that less than 50% of Australians call themselves Christians, it seems to me that we should allow people to exercise that choice.

What's this thread about? Playing on Good Friday or abolishing Good Friday?

Because the way I read it, the ones that are saying we should play footy on Good Friday are saying so because the population is not wholly Catholic.

Applying that logic, would mean no Good Friday as a religious holiday, therefore no footy on Good Friday.

Not sure what Swanny is on about. You can't have it both ways.

We are either a Christian society who celebrate Good Friday or we are not.

i dont understand the less family time argument - it was dragged out last time this debate raged on.

what if going to the football is a family event for some families?

I would much rather spend my time at the footy with the kids than stay at home eating fish and watching movies about Jesus that were made in the 60's or if you live in Melbourne the good friday telethon . And surely in these days of flexible working hours those that do beleive can take the day off and those that don't can still go to work .

Do you work on your holy days

Where is it written that thou shalt not 'celebrate' Good Friday with a game of footy? I can't see why sport and a Christian celebration must be deemed mutually exclusive.

The fact that you are asking where does it say that you cannot celebrate GF with a game of footy indicates that the significance of GF is lost on you because no-one celebrates GF.

Ever been to Saudi Arabia??

If Carlton were to play on Good Friday I'd celebrate.
