Amazing that christians continue to believe that the rest of the world should stop to celebrate their holy days and not those of all other religions.

Though I'm an aetheist I'm all for religious tolerance but I can't seem to remember too many other religions insisting that the broader community should desist from their normal activities in reverence to their specific belief system.

Then lets get rid of Good Friday as a public holiday for Christians and let assign the game on Friday night to whoever!

Okay.

Excellent - I'll let Swanny know

Agree totally. We should respect people's beliefs. But why force all the others to conform?

Absolutely agree, however lets not go too overboard we may lose the long weekend.

But to not be too religionist I hereby propose a 4 day weekend holiday for every religion there is out there. You know to celebrate it  Then every club can have a good friday match.

That should also fix my long held desire of a 4 day working week. I think we also need another labour day to celebrate not only the 40 hour week but now the 4 day working week.

I think i'm onto something here :P

The easiest way to fire some up on this site is call yourself a christain - I've done it and it works a treat .

We are still a Christain country and despite a heavy influx of other religions the majority of people in the country follow some sort of christain faith so it stand to reason that most of our holidays we be christain based.

Saying that I still can't see why we can play a game of footy on Good Friday

it's all about choice, if you want to go to Church on Good Friday then go to church, if you want to go to a movie (which you can) then go to a movie, why not also have the choice of going to the football? It's a form of entertainment also, how many people actually observe GF anyway?

Oh yeah, Josh - you look like a young Gary Busey

Given that the Italians, of all people, play football matches on Good Friday, I certainly can't see why we shouldn't follow suit.

So which country are the buddhists, muslims, jews, zoroastrians, confucians, fsm worshippers etc supposed to belong to?

Or aetheists for that matter.

Funny how the only people who ever say "we're a christian country" are christians...

Interesting discussion, on which I have a strong opnion, but that is not the reason for this post.

I really like the idea of having a rotating public holiday, commemorating / celebrating a different religion each year.

One year could be a Muslim public holiday, the next year a Buddhist one, the year after a Jewish one, and so on.

Would foster understanding and appreciation, and hopefully greater tollerance in the community.

And...we get an extra day off every year!

Choice?
Will the players be given a choice too or made to play?

Plenty of other people work on Good Friday. Why are professional football players any different, they're still paid employees?

Same choice Bachar Houli will have to make during Ramadan I guess (or would have to if Essendon* ever play in the finals during his time at the club  ).

Good point Siegfried.

Singapore is a multicultural country. There are three major cultures. Chinese, Malay and Indian. There is a public holiday to celebrate each culture and also Christmas and Easter.

To become or claim to be multicultural, we should celebrate and acknowledge the different cultures in Australia.

For some....Footy is a religion...therefore, there should be a Good Friday game, so the supporters can go to the G (their church)

good point that, I'm sure they all usually go to church

Actually they work on GF anyway - this year they probably had to turn up at the club to discuss the previous nights game, just like they are working on ANZAC Day this year.

The ones that think the religion is all about one month - or one day or one week in a year - have kind-of missed the point. I would imagine that Bachar, like many others, will probably shrug his shoulders and say 'better luck next year'.
