It appears we play our best football after a bit of agro, in particular the last two weeks.

Collingwood last week started better and we couldn't stop turning the ball over. They had all the run in the first 10 minutes until the Maxwell incident occured and the skirmish errupted. That was the turning point and they couldn't stop us.

Though we started well against the Dee's, once they dropped an extra person in the backline, they scored 4 unanswered goals to take the lead. We looked flat footed and unmotivated. When Moloney gave the little forearm to pfieffer for the 50m penalty, the little mellee that followed turned the game around and we had all the momentum scoring 9 unanswered goals.

So my theory is, our best football iseems to be played after a skermish. Therefore, should we instigate some niggle if we are flat footed and not running hard ?

I love seeing the boys when they are all fired up and play hard aggressive football. Belting the opposition into submission with physicality.

How impressive was gibbs in the first qtr against Collinwood after his clanger. The tackles he laid were inspirational. I like the new physical Carlton. Ratten's bringing his own style into the team, and boy is it good.

Here what you're saying Captain but disagree in that I don't think we should initiate any niggle. The responses the boys have had have been genuine responses to threats to their team mates not manufactured ones. I thought the way the Melbourne boys game out with the niggle at the start of the game just made them look desperate and try hard. A bit the same with North against Geelong last year. I think it says to the opposition we're not good enough to beat you with our skills so we are going to try and put you off your game.

DLC,

I understand we're you coming from. I think you may be right. Though, say if we are getting beaten and really have our backs to the wall, I wouldn't mind if we instegated some niggle to see if thea fired up the boys. This may not necessarily work, but it may be worth a try.

In todays game, everyone should really be motivated and primed to play. But that little difference, the spark that ignites us, could be the difference between winning and losing.

A little of topic and being a bit more analytical; It is also interesting to note during our wins, we play our best footy in the first two quarters, play a solid 3rd quarter in denying the opposition (bring the game into a "hold pattern"), and then we inevitable lose the last but have done enough in the first 2, to have a good buffer to defend.

I think this may be due to fitness, as in the end we are usually over-run by the opposition, but we still manage to snag a couple on the rebound.

Though we have some players under done, I think it may have been managed for us to not to be at our peak at the start of the season, but rather later in the season. Therefore coming home with a wet sale and providing us with more impetus into the next season. Just a thought.

I don't think that the little brush up was what started the avalanch, but Judd.

After Pfieffer kicked the goal, the next centre bounce hadley got the ball our to Judd who just exploded to the edge of the square and bombed a 55mt goal that showed the boys - just follow me and I'll show you the way.

Hadley is the Earl Spalding of the Chris Judd recruiting coup - and will prove just as valuable as Earl did when we got Spalding and Williams back in 1992. 8)

Judd at full flight, unstoppable banging it in from 55+ was a thing of great beauty. All the Journos and Collingfilth wannabes that said he couldnt do that anymore and that he was finished, hit the rewind and take another look. More than just the score he looked so confident. The afterburners are starting to work again, who needs inside and outside players, this bloke does it all. The pass straight down Fevola's throat in the last was pretty special as well, no wonder Wet Toast are heading south in a hurry, their best player was kicking goals for us yesterday!!!!! Now if the rumours are true and his mate is on the move as well.........

A mate of mine was in the rooms before the game.

Apparently Ratts implored the boys to get up and win "for this retarded and crippled Carlton Supporter" and pointed to this photo on the wall

Who then are De Iulio, Sholl & Athorn ?

92 certainly was a great year recrutment wise - Rohan Welsh proved a handy acquisition for a few seasons as well. Hopefully David Ellard can become our next Brent Heaver who we grabbed mid year that season.

Ratts has said that heavy training for the past two weeks is likely to be the reason that in the 4th quarter, thatmost of the players are still running but not catching anybody (Judd and Fev being the exceptions).

This extra work will allow a higher level of player fitness to emerge when their leg muscles have adapted.

The good news is that this may the case for Round 6. By then a full 4 quarters may be in the tank and I suspect it will be needed to beat the Crows.
