If he runs back to take his kick, there is nothing can, or should be able to, do to stop that.

DO NOT, under any circumstances grab at the jumper. If you're closer to the boundary than the centre, its pretty simple.

Keep your hands off and throw them out like you're standing the mark... zone him out towards the boundary.... Take a couple of half steps towards him (over the mark) at a 45-degree 'in-board' angle to make sure he is boxed in... Wait for the "back a metre, thanks Brett. BACK A METRE!!!" call from the umpire and immediately take a backwards step to show you are making an effort. Backwards for you is forwards for him so you're already heading in the right direction and if you have kept your hips square and are not flat-footed, you can easily run him dow if he tries to go by you.

You can do a lot with a metre of space. Its all about that first step.

WTF!!!!!! Insanity!!!! It was the most stupid, idiotic thing I had seen in minutes by an umpire.

What was Fraser suppose to do. Get into the air, realise Cloke was not with him and instantly drop like a stone so he didn't make contact with Cloke. Mind boggling. Absolutely mind boggling.

This game is 'Flowered' by grandstanding Umpires.

Caz I watched the replay again last night(I needed a win) and thought of your post when I saw this incident in the 2nd qtr. IMHO the free was paid because Fraser jumped early on to Cloke and then failed to make contact with the ball. Similiar situation would pay a free in a marking contest. That being said, I have no idea whether that is technically against the rules in a ruck contest.

So Fraser jumps early or late. So what! Cloke got the free because he didn't jump at all and Frasers knee catches him high. How is that possibly Frasers fault if his opponent opts not to jump. Perhaps if Cloke did jump Fraser may have got some purchase on him and manage to reach the ball.

To me it's no different to a player ducking his head trying to win a free. The umpires need to say more often...'you ducked your head play on' Likewise re Cloke 'you didn't jump so the fact he caught you high is your own fault play on'.

To me that's the common sense approach that Umpires just don't apply enough because Gieschen wants everything black and white with no gray for common sense.

haven't had a chance to check out the replay so i may be wrong on this ...

seemed to me that one umpire in particular (#29???) butchered all his centre bounces in the 3rd quarter. he would come in to bounce with his back to the members stand and the ball would go at 45 degrees to the right straight to the collingwood ruckman.

in the last qtr the (same??) umpire approached the bounce this time facing the members stand and sent the ball to the right again straight to collingwood's ruckman!!!

i think one of the upires was bouncing it super high (at least compared to the other boys......

probly confusing the shit outta the ruckmen
