The positive news from Ratten this week is that Fevola is a required player.

The flamboyant Blue, who is in the final year of his contract, has been warned that another alcohol-related incident off-field would mean immediate dismissal.

Ratten admitted the sacking of Fevola after his latest misadventure was one of several options considered by himself, chief executive Greg Swann and the leadership group.

Fevola was fined, started alcohol counselling and played the next week.

"We said let's throw all the options out there," Ratten said, when asked if Fevola's sacking was discussed.

"We went through the whole box and dice about what the outcomes could be and then said, 'what's the best solution for Brendan and the football club going forward?' "

He said he wanted Fevola to play next year.

"He is an outstanding talent and what he's done for me since I've taken over is not put a foot wrong, bar that incident," he said. "I'd be pretty confident to say he'll be here next year.

"I would have a big say in where we go (with Fevola), the board may have an opinion, but I will fight for what I believe is right for this footy club."
