...ALL players running hard offensively and defensively with intensity to create/block space or link up swiftly moving the ball ..yes??

Why do we continue to select players (you know who they are) who can't or won't consistantly do the hard yards over 4 quarters week in week out for their team mates?

In todays game ALL players need to consistantly be good in this area to win consistantly ..yes??

10 maybe 5 years ago you could get away with a few down-hill skiers in your team, but know???

So, have we come to grips with the modern game yet?

I think the club has.

I think the coaching staff have.

I think most of the players have; but it will take time for them to put their knowledge in to practice. We do it in patches, but fail to keep it up for the full four quarters. Be patient; they'll get there.

I think most of the fans (or at least many of the more vocal ones) have not.

No we haven't.

But Doc Sherrin's post from training on the 5th of March 2008 should have been a sticky. I still think it could be made a sticky!!! Doc is a learned and insightful poster... he calls it like he sees it, and I've seen him get plenty more right than wrong over the years. So here goes:

Doc Sherrin said:
Quote:
Training was enjoyable yesterday...great weather and good to see the options we have in a couple of years time. But not now. Our young guys are just that - young. They have neither the physical development nor the experience to handle senior AFL football and that was most apparent yesterday. Training for the most part was sloppy. There were some patches of brilliance, as always - however these were quickly followed by shocking disposal or shocking decision making. Turning the ball over in training will cost you the wrath of the coaches...turning it over in a game will cost you a goal, a sharp drop in confidence and the potential of splinters. But they're young - and they'll learn fast...So here's some observations.

Read it, digest it, remember it.

And next time somebody on this site thinks it is great fun to slag off the efforts of our players, then just consider how raw and young the majority of them actually are. Do they deserve our scorn or our encouragement? Does some of the bile directed at them help to build the esteem and confidence they need to have to become topline AFL Players? I'll leave some of the posters on here to ask themselves those questions, but I know what my answers are.

Don't confuse practicalities with attitude/effort Molly. I think most of our playing group, especially the younger guys, are made of the right stuff.

Molly, well said. I couldn't agree more.

I read a poster's signature on another forum which I really expresses another one of my beefs "When in doubt, blame Russell".

The pasting that some give our kids beggars belief. I especially feel for the parents, relatives and friends. To get to play AFL is an incredible achievement and we should encourage our kids to develop and succeed. Give them time for heavens sake. They know themselves if they are not quite good enough to make the cut at the end of the day and that is hard on them. The last thing they need is ill-informed and sometimes malicious blastings from supporters of their club!

You kind of go around in circles with this question and after a while it gets back to why some of the boys appear on Carltons list.

The aforementioned training post of mine is a good example of just how young our list is...and what sort of learning curve they're on. A lot have stepped out of junior footy into senior expectations. For me - a similar analogy is going from Primary School to a Private School scholarship. Grade 6 is a breeze - you've been there a while, you know how it works, you get a generalized education and you think you're good because you're about to leave the place...a promotion. A lot of other people think you're good too!

When you arrive it's not all as rosy as you thought. You're smaller than the older kids and the place is bigger - the teachers are all different and you get lost - physically and mentally as you haven't come to grips with the added expectation and there's a lot more to learn. By the time Year 9 comes around - if your results are mixed, questions are being asked about whether your place is actually deserved.

Some kids get it, some don't. We've asked the question about recruiting a natural footballer or an athlete - but the category that requires the biggest tick is 'do they have a footy brain'. I reckon we've got some kids on the list that can listen and learn and have a tremendous footy brain or the capacity to develop one. Others look like footballers but lack one or more of the basic requirements of senior footy that can be summed up by the same requirements needed by the main characters from 'Wizard of Oz'...The Scarecrow needed a brain, Tin Man needed a heart, Lion needed courage. There's a few on our list that have leaked into the system who will hopefully get what the Scarecrow, Tin Man and Lion were after before it becomes too late.

At the start of the year i recall Ratts saying the improvement will not come from the younger kids but the 70+ gamers like Waitey, Carazzo, Scotto, T-bird, Fisher and Walks

The young players become old players and get bagged then. All the players get bagged. There is some magical cut-off age or experience level whereby if a player is under it you can't bag them and if they are over it it's open season.

It's a strange system.

The modern game is all about intensity. You cannot win with passengers in the team. This explains why a team like Sydney won a flag with an average team...of course it was stars like Goodes and Hall which helped get them over the line however it goes to show you don't need much in quality if all 22 give their all for 4qtrs week in week out.

I mean look at Collingwood...another example of a very average group of players who got to a prelim last year on the back of intensity...nothing more..if they had a star or two they may have actually pinched a flag..although the filth may be the exception to the rule as always...but I'm sure you get my drift.

its not that hard verbs - some of the players with the most experience in our team have been the worst performed and have copped the wrath - the younger kids have been quite good and not the problem so have not copped the wrath

Older players have always been copping the wrath. The young ones playing well now will be copping the wrath soon too. It's how it works.

Sad.
