I'm certain i'm not alone in my anger and frustration at our team's complete inability and ineptitude when it comes to a basic skill of the game - tackling.

For years now i've gound myself left furious at both a lack of intent AND also a pathetic lack of technique when it comes to sticking decent tackles. We won't improve as an outfit until this most basic of requirements is learned.

I realise the reason so many of our players have weak hands is that they're still young but much of what is missing - apart from heart and intent - is technique. There's not much our code can learn from a game like rugby league but tackling is a BIG exception.

We happen to share digs with the best rugby league team in the world at present, the mighty Melbourne Storm. I reckon a couple of their coaches might know how to make a bloody tackle stick.

CAN OUR COACHING STAFF PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THIS SITUATION AND GET A COUPLE OF STORM BOYS IN TO SHOW OUR BOYS HOW TAKE LAY A TACKLE....FFS!!

I actually asked this in the Training thread. Why do we use tackle bags and not involve non playing humans who can at least simulate a real situation. Last time i checked bags have no arms, hips, legs and are all the same size? We also don't tackle bags properly from the training footage you see on TV? (Tell me if this is wrong away from the camera).

Do people agree that

A) We're absolutely rubbish at tackling

B) We MUST address this deficiency as a priority. and

C) We should employ the skills of the Storm in this respect

Am i right or am i absobloodylutely spot on!

Spot on mate. I get frustrated seeing opponents just slide off an attempted tackle by our boys like they are made of vaseline. Extremely frustrating to watch... :(

Would that be the chicken wing tackle or the grapple - I'm divided.

IIRC at the start of last year I and others were appaulding our tackling... and the hardball gets...

Is this right? I have a brain like a sieve but I believe we've done a 180 in this department since this time last year... :?:

If there are technique issues then coaching and practise is the only solution.

If our guys put his into practise on the field I suspect we will give a few extra free kicks in the process.

So be it I say. Lets start the application now. This year is the year to iron out our defeciencies andget the basics right.

Bury those bombers into the ground bluebaggers....make them stick...make them hurt.

But our skills are sooooooo much better than previous years.

And yet we play a player with some of the worst game comprehension I have seen while leaving out the third best tackler in the game  .

Maybe Sir Richard can incentivise the players to lay a tackle by offering them $100/tackle.

I figure if they won't do it for the team, they might do it for the money.

I dunno, i was freezing my a$$ off at the game, seems to me it was a case of cold hands on the night = pain when trying to tackle or follow up.

Im a long standing NRL supporter (bulldogs - best defense till the stormers came along) and it infuriates me to see the sub standard of tackling that is dished up ever since I joined (got membership) and started following the blues in 2005 - imagine my pain, all i know is this.

They need to get Israel Falou to come over and show them how to lay a ball and all legal tackle he is a superstar and is the best at what he does. While we are at it get billy slatter to show them how to break a line.

..too scared to tackle through a player i reckon.. ..far too worried about giving away free's, we need to tackle through the players.. ..make sure we hit them hard as we wrap arms around them.. ..if you watch closely, there's often open air between the bodies.. ..players are fast and strong, just using the arms won't hold anybody.. ..you need to hit them full body on body, knock them off balance and then you've got them..

..swap fev's punting skill in training for tackle training from storm defenders i say..

Teams have worked us out. We have small bodies so Mathews just told his boys to just take us on and bust through packs. It will happen to us once a month i reckon until we get stronger.

We are fielding a very young side. The Bears were just too strong.

agree with club29 - sure practice and training will help but mature & strong bodies will help much more.

Been an issue for a while.....think you have to enjoy tackling to be good at it.
Technique is all fine but you need the passion to do the job right, Fraser Brown for example really went after players and attacked them......Fev has a similar attitude....

might be time to look outside the square and seek different methods to enhance our players strengths

I can't remember who but one of the american football clubs were getting there players lifting bricks and pulling wheelbarrows as they found that this improved their strength in their arms and legs quicker that conventional weigh training.

When Armfield gets his chance in the seniors I will be looking at his tackling. Apparently he has been a brickies labourer since he left school. Just wonder if a bit of that real hard yakka gives an edge.
