On field I guess that match & the win over Adelaide in 2004 are the highlights of the dark years. It was brilliant, worked with the snidest, worst Essendon* supporter at the time & for the whole of the last qtr I couldn't stop thinking about how crap it would be on Monday if we clawed back that much but still lost. Can remember Jarrad Waite giving me momentary heart failure when he played on in the last qtr...

Had a quiet night in that night on the computer, spent half the time on TC & the other half checking out the latest on Bomberblitz

Then rounded out the weekend with several other blue blooded backslappers at the Bullants/Bendigo game at PP the next day.

a game of two halves.

first half almost saw me turn my back on the game, the umpiring was the bad i had enough and was almost out the door to never watch another game of AFL in my life.

but ... i stayed ... and boy was i glad :)

and the best part, that victory haunts them, haunts bummer supporters as much as the 99 prelim :)

was a ripper :)

New Northern stand, where our reserved seats are, MCG.

Had a guy standing behind us (we're in the back row)...every time Fevola would kick for goal in the second half, he'd let out an almighty, gutteral "YEEEEAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH" from the moment the ball left Fev's boot...and rode the goal home. And Fev didn't miss.

ah well Dodo here's a summary with thanks to our friends at Blueseum

This clash against the Bombers was fittingly part of 'Rivalry Round.' Essendon* had won their first 2 games of 2007 against top 4 sides from 2006 and with Carlton coming off a 78 point drubbing at the hands of Geelong the previous week, went in as favourites. Carlton appeared to pick up from where it left off in that game, with the Bombers racing away to lead by as much as 48 points late in the second quarter. But as had occurred throughout the Pre-season and in Round 1, the Blues refused to give in (unlike what tended to happen in 2006) and went on to record a remarkable comeback to beat Essendon* by just three points to carry on the recent tradition of close wins against the Bombers against expectation. The comeback from 48 points down was Carlton's greatest in its history and one of the greatest in league history, with only 14 higher. Had it not been for poor kicking, the Bombers might have been even further ahead and at half time had 10 more scoring shots.

Early on, Essendon* had too much run for Carlton and with a lead at the first break by a very comfortable looking 38 points, it looked to be how far Essendon*. Things didn't get much better at the start of the second quarter either with Essendon* adding another goal inside 30 seconds. Ó hAilpín left his man to help out his teammates in a marking contest where he made an effective spoil. But the ball spilled to Essendon* hands and an easy pass hit Lloyd goal hanging after he stayed behind the play. After kicking the goal he ran to Setanta and goaded him as the Bombers looked in total command. Carlton, to their credit, slowly edged back into the game and showed some enthusiasm, if not yet genuine fight. Lappin was moved forward and kicked a much needed goal. For much of the second term the Blues were outscoring Essendon* only for the Bombers to maintain their edge. However, at the 29 minute mark Whitnall was reintroduced to the game, after sitting out the second quarter to date on the bench, seemingly out of form and he, along with players like Scotland, Carrazzo, Murphy, Stevens and Gibbs were able to provide some quality touches to allow three late goals to the Blues in the final minutes of a marathon 34 minute quarter, including two to a previously wayward Fevola. Carlton went into the main break with a 5 goal deficit.

Carlton's endeavour continued into the third quarter and they were now showing real fight, guts and determination. An early goal to the Blues allowed them to keep their momentum and go on to outscore the Bombers 7 goals to 1 to hit the lead for the first time at the 22-minute mark and end the stanza with a seven point lead: a remarkable feat considering their terrible start to the game. Essendon* were looking tired and complacent. Full Forward Brendan Fevola would kick 4 of these on prized Bomber recruit Mal Michael as the forward line sprung to life. In fact, Essendon*'s only goal in the third came from a mysterious free to Lloyd which wasn't over the shoulder, it wasn't holding on - perhaps Setanta was just too tall for him!

The last quarter was a tough, exciting struggle with both teams fighting out the game to the end. For the neutral fan it would have made great viewing. For many Carlton fans though, their hearts would have been in their mouths as their side had fought so hard for the lead and the fans could only hope the Blues would hang on. Essendon* tried manfully and closed out the game with a slight edge in momentum. Both sides wasted opportunities to win the game but in the end Carlton managed to hang on to record a slender three point victory.

It was a fantastic fightback from the Blues who were able to make the Bombers pay for some poor misses, especially when they had control of the first quarter. In truth the game should have been over at that point. Even though Lloyd ended the match with five goals, Setanta Ó hAilpín could still be very proud of his game. Probably the only four quarter performer and his willingness to never give up typifed the resolve needed to get back into the game. Brad Fisher and Matthew Lappin popped up with some very handy goals. Brendan Fevola returned to his 2006 Coleman Medal form to end the game with eight goals, despite looking like the yips from the previous round were going to continue- but once he kicked his first goal he never missed another shot and he was able to repay the vastly improved delivery from midfield. Heath Scotland and Ryan Houlihan were the leading possession getters with 26 and 24 quality disposals respectively and provided plenty of run and rebound from defence and in the midfield.

All in all a great team effort from Carlton in a game that really did live up to being part of the AFL's 'Rivalry Round' and in the end, a win for the true believers. After the game, coach Denis Pagan described it as the most satisfying home-and-away victory of his illustrious career.

Back on topic i was at home on computer after 5 am posting on TC

Was behind the goals, punt rd end wedged in amongst 10 scum supporters. First half was torture. The second half pure joy. When the final siren went the seats around me were deserted within a millisecond...pure magic.

Will miss this weeks game as I am working overseas now. I'm sure we will rise to the occasion again. We just love playing against this mob.

At another bloody wedding. Thankfully there were quite a few Blues people there. The service was over and we were heading to the bar. I was listening to the game on the radio in a friends car each time i popped out for a ciggie. The first half lets not go there. I decided that i may as well drink to numb the pain. And then it all started to turn. Second half, literally sat in the car for the rest of the game. Politely pretended to be interested in the other guests. I however had bigger things to focus on. All frocked up, looking the goods, screaming my ass off, radio full ball, bipping the horn like no tomorrow each time we kicked a goal. I was all class. By the 3rd quarter i had the bar staff, who were by then bringing ouzo to me in the car, (i think he wanted to have a crack!) The people of Brigton have never seen anything like it in there lives. My friend cracked it as it was a new car and she was worried that I had damaged the speakers. Such a little detail. The final siren saw the wedding goers, bar staff, general hanger onerers hugging and rejoicing in the streets of Brigthon. Then we watched the replay on the big screen in the bar before the reception began. It does not get much better than that.
Have a great day.
BM
PS - the funny thing is that almost a year to the day I am attending another wedding ...........fingers, toes, everything crossed that we can do it all again.
PSS - Stevo for BOG, Fev to kick 7, Fisher mark of the year, which will go with potential goal of the year for Betts last week.

At the game woth my family and an Essendon* supporting friend and his family. Deeply satisfying! My 6 year old son cried with relief and excitment when the final siren sounded. Drove home with the scarves flying out the car windows and the kids completely feral. Can't wait to see them after we win a Grand Final!

Was at the game with my mate and brother (Blues) and my other mate and his son (Bummers)- the first half, the mate's son (8yo) razzed me with the biggest, most crooked smile as Essenscum really should have led by 12 goals. Then, as soon as we kicked the three goals in time-on of the 2nd 1/4, I turned around to my closest and stated, "We're not out of this by a long shot!". The second half was absolute joy! The following Tuesday, my work colleague (Essenscum sh5estirrer who hates the Blues) was so gutted he proceeded to tear strips off me for reminding him of it and then went to say the Scum had a more talented list than us! One of the best wins I have seen in my 35 years of following the Blues! :-D

i was behind the goals at the Social Club end in the first quarter. I had a Carlton mate with me. I also had 3 Bomber mates who went up to the top deck near the open bar.

Quarter time seen many of us gutted. A lot were turning on themselves. I had about 15 missed calls. Mates wanting me to join them and get stuck in.

All I kept saying was that it was early days. We just needed some momentum before half time. Kick a couple in a row.

Who would have thought heh?

Suffice to say that it was one of the greatest games I had attended. Other than the prelim in 99. What a finish.

Top deck, southern stand. Great game. And like was mentioned before Fev was in one of those moods and every shot in the 3rd quarter I was cheering before he’d even dropped it on the foot with an almighty roar which was really pissing off the scum faithful around me. Flower’em!!!

It was beautiful! Still not up with the ’99 prelim though

I also was at a wedding , in Wagga Wagga ( It's beyond me why people get married in the footy season) . Came out of the church and dashed to the car and was totally deflated to hear the score just as the 3rd quarter commenced. Was driving to the reception when we kicked a few goals ,so much to my wifes digust ,I dropped her at the reception and headed to the nearest pub to watch the game. Bloody glad I did. Got back to the reception and had a very good night - Free Beer and a Pain In The A Brother in Law bomber supporter to annoy.

At the game with a buch of Bumbers fans and one other Bluebagger. Copped a lot of abuse from said friends, and made it worse for them by not saying a word after the game. That worried them even more.

Had to take the family over to the in laws for one of those painful get togethers. On the way had the radio blaring and was silently steaming that the wife would even think about organising a function when Carlton were playing!!!

Early days I'm thinking we're going to get hammered again, Pagan has to go etc etc, the anger at the team is starting to ferment with the anger at having to take the family to some boring get together etc. Just before I reach critical mass and go postal the worm starts to turn. As we pull into the in-laws driveway i can feel the momentum start to swing. Screech to a halt, run past the in-laws in the driveway, straight into their house and put on their foxtel.

Wife and kids follow in due course, angry that I've deserted them and forgotten to thank the in-laws profusely for having us all over etc etc Something else was/might have been said, I'm not sure because by then i was past caring. Anyhoo, afternoon spent not mixing/socialising/taking an interest in anybody else, just watching the box and cheering.

Best family get together ever!!
