Benjamin is the fastest player on our list.

Hampson, O'hAilpins are amonst the fastest players on our list - this doesnt make the rest of our list slow - it makes these 3 200cm boys the most unique and potentially damaging players on any AFL list - we need to put more AFL games into these boys.

I'd say Simmo and Juddy are far and away our best runners. Murph AW & Scotto go pretty hard as well but there's not much after that.

We need more?

Who??

..and whom do they replace :?:

Banno and Houlahan.

Both have no future with this club. As talented as Houla is, he is to slow and to soft.... kick him to curb and throw Banno out with him

Houlihan IS quick and makes a lot of space for himself. If you took your blinkers off you'd see that.
And I reckon he can spell too.

We really need Benjamin to make it more than almost anyone on our list. We're absolutely desperate for a player with his speed running through the midfield.

Houlihan is our just about best passer of the ball since Greg Williams.

All he needs is the ball in space and someone to shepherd for him.

Is Andy McLeod of the Crows slow?

Houlihan beat him in a few sprints to the ball last year...I too was surprised.

What are you saying Melvey? Houla's slow? Describe what your view of him is, that would explain things.

I think Houla looks laconic. You know what they say about perception?

I strongly agree with this Agro.

It's a point of difference.

The x factor.

The advantage.

A match up nightmare for anyone.

We've got to give them the best of the best development program; it's worth it in the long run.

Perhaps the question of speed should be referenced to the "will" to ........

the will to run to the ball, the will to run to position, the will to chase down an opponent, the will to do something!!

Do we have any "wills" on our list?

I think your right on the money Rod.

Anyone who makes a senior team are there for a reason; ability. The MC believe in them and they try to inspire them to achieve by building up their confidence and giving them an assignment before they cross the white line.

What the player does is driven by what is going on between their ears.

Will I go in hard?
Will I get that nut?
Will I use my body to shield a team mate? ...

That's up to the player to decide.

That thing I call 'devlish desire' is the power of 'WILL'.

Extreme pace and no will power = failure
Pace and will to win = success
Extreme pace and will to win = lethal weapon

I have no idea who you are responding to here, but there's almost no similarities between any of the players you mention.

Jackson has a huge tank, but isn't super quick off the mark. Keeps running though over a long distance.

Eddie is quick off the mark but not super quick over a long distance and unfortunately lacks the big tank.

Banno is quick off the mark and has a big tank, but hasn't yet demonstrated a consistent ability to win and use the footy.

Judd may not be back to his best, but still has a good step and a great ability to find space and use the ball well. There's no way even in his current state you could call him slow. He kept pace with Foley last week, even got a hand on him. That ain't slow.

I think it's only partialy about speed.

It's more to do with gut busting running, both ways, from everyone on the team, for a whole match.

Add to that high midfield rotation via the interchange.

That's just the way modern footy is.

As long as we don't get hung up on speed at the expense of football ability. My memory of David Clarke is less than wistful.

Picked out a couple of quotes from TalkingTraining by Wangers and Elvis.

Quote:
Focus of today was contested one on one work and holding the ball up until the right option was available. Seems part of our game plan is to play tempo footy cause that's what was being practiced.

Quote:
One of the training drills worked on beating the flood by holding on to the ball around the middle and then moving it sideways until a forward presented.

Wouldn't holding the ball up in the middle of the ground allow the opposition to flood the small area of our forward line blocking any meaningful space to comfortably lead into and mark?

I would've thought running the ball swiftly forward from half back in waves or groups of players sharing the ball would beat opposition defenders flooding back thus creating space further up the ground.

I think Saints played that running in waves Vs Swans last week and kicked a shocking score.

I wanna see them take the first option. Too many times they hold on for too long and get run down or turn it over.

Not naming names, but one's name refers to part of the UK, and the other can be spun around a school girl's hips 8) .

Ok well I think I've cracked your code Duke:

The first part must refer to Thornton in Craven, a town in North Yorkshire.

The second disturbs me a little bit, but you must be referring to Simpson, like the washing machine (please dont try that at home kids).

Foley, King and Raines smoked most of our players for pace when they got a head of steam up and our poor tackling didnt do much to slow them down.....pace also shows out as work rate and the tigers worked harder and made us look slow.

re: Essendon*...are flavour of the month with their running game and variety of speedsters but that type of game plan wont win finals or be sustained for a season...

You need balance.. some physically quick players and some mentally quick players...
