I was at the AFL Season Launch last night [strangely enough at the same venue as Carlton's Season launch] and I can tell you that of our guys that I saw - Swan, Ratts, Sticks all seemed very relaxed.

The Spew however was just vile.

When he was doing his speech, had those thingamijiggies that the President of the US of A uses when making speeches - like a telepromptor for the intellectually stupid.

No doubt big noting himself as he was the only one that actually used out of Craig Willis and Fitzy.

MCG - Round 22 - 2001 was the birth place of tanking. Scum v richmond which ninthmond won.

Hird was removed from the ground at the 15 min mark of the last while scum were down by 15 points.

After the match Hird said it was a discipline thing, sheedy said it was because the game was beyond reach(get your stories straight boys). It ensured the scum didn't have to play their bogey team in the first round of the finals - TANK!

It was born in 1999 when Fremantle came up against Geelong in round 22. If they won they wouldn't have got the picks which secured them Hasleby and Pavlich

North Melbourne in 2006 put Shagga and Simmo in for surgery, but North didn't divulge what was wrong with one of the players. Just that it was best to put them in for surgery and get them ready for season 2007.

Collingwood in 2005 3 goals up against North Melbourne with a few minutes remaining somehow got beaten. Coincidentally in the week leading up to the game Chris Tarrant had scans on his knee and the club decided to book him in for surgery.

Hawthorn in 2005 7 goals up at one stage against Richmond in the Round 21 game, yet, just like Collingwood they ended up losing. Where was the outcry? Why weren't there any calls then for their picks to be taken off them?

I guess you can always count on people bashing Carlton; the problem is that many of these are Filth and Hawthorn supporters.

And why was Libba approached about the story? Eddie wouldn't be interested in getting some 'dirt' on Carlton would he? He must still be VERY bitter about what happened. Swann executed the plan perfectly at Collingwood in 2005 and did the same last year with us; yet Swann was able to lure JUDD to the club Eddie hates most. I know it hurts Eddie for you to miss out on JUDD with Swann a key factor in the deal but you have to get over it

And Magpies full-forward Chris Tarrant may be in line for season-ending surgery, depending on the result of a knee scan tomorrow.

It is alright for Tarrant to have season ending surgery isn't it KB but not ok for Thornton and Fevola.
Tarrant's last game for season 2005 was the week before the uber tank against North Melbourne

Quote:
Dean Laidley has foreshadowed a radical change in how the Kangaroos approach their pre-season training programme with Shannon Grant, Adam Simpson and Daniel Pratt all set to undergo season-ending surgery in order to be ready for an early October return to Arden St.

"One or two guys probably played their last games of the year today, but we'll have a look at that a little bit more closely (during the week)," he said.

"Simmo more than likely, Shannon we'll have to wait and see, we don't know how long his rehabilitation time is and until we actually see our specialist during the week, that'll determine when he finishes playing."

The Kangaroos' coach would not divulge the nature of the players' respective injuries, but did describe Simpson's issues as "wear and tear on other parts of his body" and not the foot injury that has bothered the skipper this season.

Where was the outcry. "wear and tear" It's ok for Simmo and Shagga but not for Thornton or Fevola

Great stuff Effes! :-D

Is 'won few enough' even grammatically correct?

It still amazes me that a team who is 2-9 at the half-way mark of a season is crap, yet the same team that finishes on 4-18 is tanking.

Tanking is a simplistic load of crap.

Quote:
The system initiates and instigates cycles of achievement.
If you are successful, the system penalises you with later draft picks and conversely, it rewards teams that struggle.
It is only reasonable that clubs will find themselves in a constant transition between development and stability.
A transition that the AFL system intentionally creates!

Carlton were in a development phase last year. The development of players to ensure long term success did take precedence over short term success.
And so it bloody should have!

Its pointless playing injured or soon to be delisted players when you can be getting experience into your kids.
Players need to be developed. They dont just wake up one morning with poise, experience and composure. It takes time, patience and foresight.
It also requires youngsters to play before they are ready sometimes. Its the only way experience can be obtained.
And yes, sometimes they will take the spots of older, more experienced players.
They're the sacrifices you make when you are trying to build a platform for sustainable success.

If Libba cannot see the difference, he was over his head in the first place.

Well said BV.

Mark Doran letting lose on SEN. Sounds very unhappy at what Libba has claimed.

A few snippets to date from the presser (I may have the quotes not quite exact, but the gist of what Swann and Ratten said should be right)...

GS: Everyone knows why we’re here, responding to allegations on The Footy Show. The club strongly and emphatically denies any tanking in the last however many games it was alleged to have happened.

R12-16 we lost by an average of 76pts in 5 games, list and club was going nowhere, that was when we removed Denis. The club was on it’s knees.

Mandate for Brett was to look at the list, play all the kids, play them in positions they hadn’t been played before. Jamison, Hampson, Bower, Austin all played senior football, Make no apologies for looking at our list.

Pleasing from that period is that these kids are in the mix for R1.

At no stage did we ever, ever talk about losing or throwing games of football. Went out every week to win.

Last 6 games losing margin was reduced to 30pts.

Has spoken to Andrew Demetriou, no talk of investigation, the club is happy to cooperate with the AFL if there is an investigation, we have nothing to hide.

BR: Didn’t know if he was going to be Carlton senior coach, they have taped audio form the coaches box from the Port Adelaide game, if the AFL wants to listen to that I have nothing to hide.

BR: T-bird had ankle surgery which was required. Biggest investment for me is the players. Thank god we put Bret out. His recovery took longer than hoped and he started pre-season three weeks late. If he was left, then he would have only started training in January.

GS: Pretty peeved at it, it’s a massive slur on the club. A distraction we don’t need. We’ll have a look at it (legal action). In 6 days time a massive game for the club, just want to focus on that. Hope to put this issue to bed now.

BR: Want to win against Richmond, not that worried about it now, Let’s get into round 1.

GS: A disgrace to suggest we were sending out players for surgery that didn’t require it. (Gave Andrew Walker as an example, the club asked if he required shoulder surgery late last year and the advice was no, so he played out the year.)

GS: We’re charged with responsibility to do the best with our club. Wasn’t going to achieve anything playing the same players (after Ratten took over). The charter was to play some kids with an eye to the future. We need to see them in the heat of battle. Murphy tagged some guys for the first time. Gibbs played forward and in the centre. That’s what we used the time for. We definitely tried to win. Club would have been decimated if they kept going the same way, it was embarassing (at time of Pagan sacking). Never, ever a suggestion to the coaching panel that “you cannot win”.

BR: I told the players I wanted to win every game we played in. Kade Simpson has played 65 games for about 10 wins. We need to get the winning culture back at our club. Kangaroos finished 14th sent a few players off and rebounded quickly. We can bounce back quickly as a club.

BR: Spoke to boys this morning, told them how I felt about it. The growth of our club comes from our youth. Growth and potential of kids is enormous. Hampson looked homesick when he was drafted, this year he the first out on the track with great enthusiasm. Turn around came after just 2 games of AFL footy.

GS: Libba’s contract expired and it wasn't renewed. No animosity with Libba when he left, all shook hands. Not interested why he did interview.

End presser…

Ian Coutts: As far as Carlton is concerned the matter is closed. If anyone else wants to follow it up, speak to the AFL.

Yeah .. nicely done by swanny and Ratten .. mentions that the AFL can listen to the entire Port Adelaide from the carlton box and determine whether or not they were trying to win the game or not

Guys, you should have been smarter aabout concealing it. Instead of giving Brett ratten the gig for the last 6 games, you should have given the job on an interim basis to Peter "onwards and upwards" Rohde - you wouldn't have gotten within 60 points of any team, let alone 6 points, even with Kouta circa 2000 in your team.

Libba :shakes head:. The new Arthur Tunstall of football. Every half-wit journo will now go to dial-a-quote to get a poorly constructed headline grab.

Libba's photo will adourn the corrodors of Princes Park alongside Stephen O'Reilly's. What a stupid, bitter fool
