I wouldn't have expected any less from Libba.

I've said this before and I'll say it again but I thought he was pretty poor at the Sydney CFC function before the 2007 game.

Loyal when he had a job but by gee hasn't he burnt his bridges.

He can kiss any AFL coaching gig goodbye after this display...

Again you're wrong John. I'm very passionate about Carlton. I hate them with as much passion as you love them.

Sorry if I over-reacted. I'm tired and it's bedtime.

Carry on. :-D

Tanking is a most disgusting and repugnant part of our game. But it happens. It has to happen due to the bullshit system the AFL has set up for all clubs.

Collingwood did it. Carlton did it.

We're not the only ones and we won't be the last.

But please, you guys having a go a Libba for saying it out loud is kinda pathetic. Should we go back and count the number of tanking threads this board has generated in the past 2-3 years?

I don't doubt that you're right and this was a good post, but for the Libba part.

Personally, I think that the interview was a beat up by Hutchy, where he repeatedly asked the same questions in different ways, until he got the answer he wanted. Libba just wants the publicity and the $ he was undoubtedly paid for his comments.

Libba has now officially joined the pantheon of bitter ex-footballers who think that the game owes them a living for the rest of their lives. He can't get a job, so he'll grab a headline.

He may have been in the box, but he gave no definitive "evidence" of tanking, despite the ridiculous claims of Hutchy and TFS. He gave an opinion based on a "feeling". The interview would actionable at law, but for the fact that it would only drag the issue through the Courts and the papers and it would be better for Carlton (and probably the AFL) if it was quickly forgotten.

Libba claimed that Carlton played players last year that weren't ready for senior footy, were ambiguous about on field success for the last few weeks and sent others off for operations. Who doesn't do this at the end of a season regardless of a priority pick? The point in playing youngsters and rehibilitating established players is to plan for the future.

His comments also overlook the playing of Walker (whilst injured) and Whitnall, who admittedly was probably just getting "thank you" games.

In the last 5 years Collingwood, Carlton, North, Richmond, Essendon*, Melbourne, Hawthorn and St Kilda have all benefitted from the priority pick system. I have no doubt that all these clubs ensured that they wouldn't miss out.

Paul Roos was a bit rich with his sniping last week, given his clubs history of financial and other aid from the AFL. Not to mention the fact that he clearly did what was alleged, it is just that none of us really care.

The story about Libba was a beat up of no value and it would be sad for him if he wasn't so obnoxiously bitter and pathetic. It every ex-footballer with a gripe got air time of that type, there would be a lot of litigation to follow....

Good post, I agree with just about all of it.

The really funny thing that I found about the interview, based on Libba's comments, was that not only did he have no proof or even hint of proof of tanking by the coaching panel; He pretty much described in detail exactly how any coaching panel would feel at the end of a long and unsuccessful season: They weren't trying to lose, but weren't upset if they didn't win.

If the coaching staff not being upset by losing a couple of games is Libba's proof of tanking, then he really has some issues.

If Hutchy is so hell bent on approaching Libba for his version of events, why does he not head down to Punt Road and ask some people down there if Richmond "tanked" any games?

Because they're not the ones in the news about it. Despite the fact that there is more meat to it courtesy of Terry "My position is compromised because of this situation" Wallace.

This was done by two people who clearly colluded to gain fame and attention, and they don't care if they drag a whole football club through the mire to do so.

Anyone else notice how many times Libba didn't want to make an outright claim, and Hutchy basically forced the words down his throat? Also, how the camera was always behind Hutchy when he asked the questions? I wouldn't be half surprised if he created questions to fit the answers, and Libba was so stupid he fell for it.

If Libba is prepared to give evidence based on his "vibe" of what was going on we have a LOT to be worried about after all there is a precedent.

Well Libba has dug his own grave:

http://news.realfooty.com.au/libba-accu ... -1zb6.html

"I never heard (a directive to lose), but I could feel it, if that makes sense," Liberatore said.

No-one can prove we tanked.

Correct. good post.

People are gonna whinge about this for a long time. Will be in the news for a bit. But we probably won't suffer any negative consequences.

One would think though that the populist AFL will act to change the PP rule quite soon in order to appease the masses.

I'm glad the article points out Libba's history.

Quote:
It is the second time in a matter of weeks Liberatore has taken a swipe at one of his former employers.

Last month, the former Western Bulldogs Brownlow Medallist said Bulldogs chief executive Campbell Rose was a divisive figure who should be sacked and that 'Dogs coach Rodney Eade should also get his marching orders if he could not guide the club to the finals this year.

Just when I'm about to go to bed, you leave me with that mental image - cheers Jars

what a flower is Libba...as soon as they mentioned it on TFS I knew it would be him.

Compelling stuff too.

"Yeah nah nothing was actually ever said directly, but like if you handed something to someone, they'd say something like 'tanks for that' in a jocular way"

"I don't know if there were any directives, but there was just a feeling"

"Was there a feeling of sadness or happiness after the Melbourne game?"

"Ah well I don't know if it was happy but it definitely wasn't sadness"

The guy actually didn't say anything at all. But I guess that won't stop the 'bogans & no shows' getting on a roll tomorrow - a bit disappointed the club is even bothering to respond to be quite honest.

I don't think I have read a post denying tanking yet, so what are you talking about?

IMHO everyone is annoyed that an "exclusive" story was aired for everyone to see which implies that we did as such with no credible proof whatsoever. These stories only breed heresay from anyone who has an agenda they would like to push when it suits them.

I would have preferred if the little turd came out and said "I heard the coach say that he was trying to lose a game" and then try to prove that to the AFL. Then it would have been knocked on the head quick smart - just like Paul Roos and his "jocular" statement.

Luckily, either way, the guy has no credibility.

Which will be interesting to see considering the spew's constant denials through 2007 that tanking exists.
