Its still got me stuffed how people during the first half of the season ridiculed Carlton for being pathetic, yet during the second half of the season whinged about tanking when Carlton had something to gain. I can't see how a pathetic club that went close to Collngwood, Port Adelaide and St.Kilda deliberately threw the game away. Collingwood and Port finished in the top four after the finals season. The only dubious game, in my opinion, was the round 22 game. If you look at Carlton's record in Round 22 over the last 5 years, it isn't very pretty so they can probably get away with that anyway.

She is right.

Her wording re: Carlton was a bit OTT, but overall, she has a point. The reason she puts us in the spotlight is that we're the latest ones to do it, as opposed to a few seasons back, when we couldn't think of winning games to save ourselves.

There whas been tanking talk for years but I've never seen a side do what we did against Collingwood late last year.

If anyone in the comp deserved that pick it was us! I don't think anyone should begrudge us it, especially when the rules changed the year before and instead of picking at 3 for our second pick it was 17. We have languished at the bottom of the ladder for 5 years. How much longer does Caro want us to stay there? Should the club not do everything in its power to rebuild. The bottom line is that I am not sure we could have won those games even if we did in fact try to win.

Also, did Richmond tank the first half of the season?

God forbid she would mention Richmond in a bad way.

Her motivation is simply that we took her beloved tigers pick. :-D

More of the bagging Carlton press gallery - it's all being set up so they can discount our 17th.

I stopped reading that at paragrapgh 2, she'd lost all sense of perspective, and it cruelled her article.

Anyway, what's her point - the AFL stuffed? we all knew that.

I actually disagree. We have been pox for 5 years straight so to suggest that Carlton has actually decided that they are not going to win anymore is quite ludicrous.
If you want an example of tanking then the year that allowed Collingwood to snare Thomas and Pendlebury is tanking. Write off the season, milk the draft and a quick rise up the ladder the following year. Collingwoods list that year did not warrant them two picks in the first 5 of that draft.

Is it tanking when you use the last six weeks of the season to try - under match conditions - players in spots they have untested potential in?

Win by a point, its a stroke of genius from the coaching staff.
Lose by a point, you tanked.

I think Caro's a little confused. She's probably had a few loyal wingmen tank one in the sack.... Plenty of blokes out there with teeth marks on their shoulders.

Yes it is amazing that Collingwood's tactics have somehow become erased from the memory bank.

As for the article well no shades of grey there. Caroline the mind-reader knows for a fact that we tanked.

From the article:

The Blues not only were rewarded for tanking by gaining the best tall young footballer to emerge in the national draft for several years, but untried coach Brett Ratten won a coaching contract on the back of six successive losses.

I always believed that Ratts had the position sewn up prior to the end of the season?

I don't see what the big deal is with the Swans - you win a match you play in the next round... you lose, and you play anyway in the regional outback bush-bashin' challenge cup thingo. Why not just play kids the whole way through and let the result take care of itself?! Maybe it's the intensity of the Cup!? :garthp:

All great and OBVIOUS points made by everyone here - and if Caroline Wilson had a brain she would have made them hersel - but being the vindictive "insert gender inspecific term here" she is, she just wouldn't have a clue.

- Collingwood's Thomas and Pendlebury one season tanking effort.

- AFL extending our draft penalties by stealth in 2006 by changing the Draft Rules consigning us to Pick 1 and 17 instead of Pick 1 and 3.

- In the one breath saying how poor our on-field performance is but in the next saying we are good enough to tank.

- Taking Judd off the Tigers when they were in the Box Seat all along.

Caro go and flower yourself - and there are many people who believe you actually can.

"Carlton deliberately lost games of football and destroyed for many fans the integrity of the last two months of the home-and-away season"

This is a highly defamatory statement and she backs it up with little evidence. I have little knowledge of the legal system, but surely she should be required to answer for this.

You can't accuse Richmond of tanking when they so often loose. THATS BECAUSE THEY ARE SIMPLY RUBBISH.

Oh look

we tanked. But we don't owe anybody any apologies. The AFL had royally screwed us over for years. Despite the fact we got the best young KPP for several years in the draft, and the best footballer in the league, we are still atually one or two picks short when you balance up the discrimination against us over the years. From memory, David Rhys-Jones said pretty much exactly the same thing when asked whether he wanted us to win the round 22 game against Melbourne - something like, 'well the AFL owes us one (draft pick)'.

Before that game I would have agreed with you. MCG against the arch enemy, game up for grabs going into time on and we rest our 2 leading ball winners and the top goal scorer kinda changed my mind.

CW isn't right. How can you prove a team tanked that had won the previous two wooden spoons?
