Much better second half. The game in the first half was played on the Hawks terms.

Again, a very young team, inexperienced and still learning the game plan.

I thought the defence looked better with T-Bird there and have reservations about Bower when he has the ball.

Well done to Special K, gutsy effort to take the big hit (you are an arse Campbell) and get straight up, to bad he didn't finish it off. Also good to see 3 boys go after Campbell and tell him all about it.

Oh well we are off to Alice Springs next week against West Coast, I can't see Juddy coming in next week

So,

- Bower and Grigg impressed in defense
- Gibbs looks ... very good.
- Hadley had an impact.
- Kreuzer did one or two nice things.
- Hampson competing - my favourite player.
- Cloke had a purple patch.
- Stevens playing very well.
- Fevola put in a big effort.
- Others did some good things too.

Overall, there were positives for almost everyone. Unfortunately, there were negatives for everyone as well. So many skill errors! So many decision making errors! Very frustrating.

Murphy had another shocker in terms of disposal skills.

Not totally happy with how that panned out. Positives, sure, but negatives too. Maybe I expect too much. I'm sick of being bad, and I know it takes a lot of time, but only now do I realise how bad it really got.

Where will our forward line be in 5 years?

Well I'm happy. Obviously we still haven't come to terms with our game plan, but our pre-season games have been against quality opposition in Port and Hawks, plus we play West Coast next week.

The Hawks only scored 103pts against us tonight. Last year that would of been 150+, and the Hawks goal scorers were mostly midfielders which tells me our work rate was well down defensively and that our key defenders actually stood up well.

I'm still confident we will finish 8-12 wins comfortably, we have so much upside as a team and individually.

Tonight's best IMO were Gibbs, Murphy, Jamo, Grigg, Simmo, Stevens. Special mention to the cameos by Hadley and Kreuzer.

Did you count Murphs clangers abd turnovers?

Yeah, what is it with him? He seems incapable of running in a straight line.

Did you notice how Murphy knocked up getting the ball first before he made the clanger? The skill level will come back, its the confidence Murphy gains from being free of a tag that he needs to build on.

The good things about tonight's match is that it removes any expectation of drastic improvement. And it shows that we have the spirit to fight back when we need to. Now we can work on not giving 70 point leads. The other good thing is listening to my neighbour shouting that Hawthorn are going to win the premiership- i feel like shouting that- Its only the NAB cup! Hawthorn supporters are funny. Its weird to say after being down 70 points before scoring a goal, but i am quite proud of their spirit. Go blues!

IMHO the skill errors were due to the pressure the Hawks put us under but if you are going to handball, you have to hit the target.

Oh does anyone know how Jacko is, he looked in a lot of pain.

They'll just tell themselves they took their foot off the pedals and made it a contest for us.

Shame no-one told the blokes being hounded by three blokes everytime he got it.

Of course he gets the ball. That is obvious. However if he continually turns it over then I would rather Murph blocked, assisted , covered. I take your point about the skills will come. I sincerely hope so.

the last 2 and 1/2 quarters were a hell of a lot better than the 1st, but overall a pretty disappointing effort really. i know its only NAB cup etc etc, but really it certainly didn't fill one with confidence. a showing like that will hurt the membership drive as well. i don't mind losing, but insipid displays whether NAB cup or not are not acceptable. the first half was terrible and was delivered to a national audience.

the clowns on bog footy and SEN will have a field day with it.

bring on the season proper, and lets see what we can really do.

hopefully a lot better than tonight.

by the way, i reckon Gibbs gave us a glimpse of whats ahead of him, and i have to say its bloody exciting.

Bower on the hand i have grave concerns. his disposal, decision making and peripheral vision are terrible. i just cringe every time he has the ball.

I don't care about the loss at all, but that first half was completely, and utterly unacceptable; and I'm sure the players know it.

At least we improved in the 3rd, and 1st half of the 4th; but the Hawks had eased up.

Gibbs, and Grigg played well.

Bower, Kruezer, and Hadley showed promise.

The latter two especially as the game went on.

Slimmo, Stevens, Scotty, and Hoops were good, but lacked consistency; faded in and out of the game.

Fev looked a lot better than last week.

Something I noticed in the Port game, and again tonight; the majority of our players lack composure when they have possession.

I know we're young, but the Hawks are also a young team, and they're much more composed than we are.

Perhaps this is a result of recruiting athletes, instead of footballers (yes I know how popular that sentiment will be on this board).

Maybe it's just a different learning curve, ie footballers will get caught more, but be able to get out of it easier, whereas athletes will get caught less, but not be as composed when they do.

Either way, I think it's far too early to make any kind of judgement on the players.

A game like tonight reminds us just how young, and inexperienced we really are.

Lack of skill level reflected the lack of proper structures.
We rarely knew how to structure and set up to achieve continuity.
Competing was good... but need to work on setups and confidence in executing disposal.

A few good positives tonight.

But need ALOT of work if were to move forward with any intent.

Much better second half and glad we ran the game out. Good to get some more game time into the kids. Win/loss unimportant, improving our skills and goal kicking the key to any chance of anything resembling success in 2008.

I wasnt going to watch the nab but i am an addict so here goes.
Russell will not make it. Is simply too timid and is a shit kick. Its all in the mind with this kid.
Murphy Some shocking decision making. Worked his way into the game to his credit. Simply must improve his kicking. Has a unusual action and lacks penetration with his kicking. Has lost the confidence he had in his first season.

Gibbs OK but would like to see him mix it up more in the middle.Still only 18.

Simpson Should be captain. More inspirational than Stevens.

Kreuzer Yep not bad but another who has suspect kicking action. Is kicking a skill taught in junior footy?
Hadley jury will be out.
Grigg Very good . One of the few guys in our team that can kick the footy.

Betts ok Is what I call a natural footballer.
Austin Simply not ready yet. Another season as an ant
Hampson Yep good . Has a crack. better than the hack
Hartlett Didnt play So disappointing. I just feel that the hammies will always be a problem. We really need Hartlett
Stevens Tried hard .Runs hard. Cant fault him on that but gets too many soft possessions. Isnt captaincy material. Never will be
Fevola Ok tried hard. But as i said should of got rid of him last year. His body will be f-cked in a year or too. Didnt play with the same freedom that I have seen him play in the past. Will rely on strength more than in the past. Looks bigger.
Armfield Yep is a goer but also has shocking kicking style. Played up the middle more than in defence. Will be just a player at most. Not bad for pick 46
Cloke handy big body. Thats about it.
Scotland OK
Waite Is not a brilliant footballer as many astute judges think. He isnt because he doesnt possess a football brain and he is a shit kick. great athletes like Kouta wont dominate the game in the future because every player is bigger and stronger. I would personally trade Waite. He will continue to frustrate.

Thornton Is too slow. Is not a forward . He is a defender but I wonder whether he will be up to it. And when will he ever kick it long.

Houlihan Looks tough with the number one. Great skills but lacks impact. Want him up forward. The feeling I have is the coaches dont know what to do with this guy.

Wiggo Doesnt do enough
Pfeiffer Is that how you spell it. Has a crack but another who cant kick. @#$%&!
Edwards Not in it at all. Massive doubts that he has got it in him
Jackson Corky .Cant have a crack at him.
Jamison Yeah Ok. Looked a bit lost at time but I still like him
Carrazzo Anyone who has a crack at Carrots is a moron. The guy has a footy brain gets it and is a better kick than most. Its obvious he has worked hard to improve the defiencies in his game unlike others

Ellard Not bad for a rookie

Look I know its early but its going to be a long season. The same players that frustrated us last year will frustrate us again in 08. Our skills are shit and this possession game only works if you have the confidenc to pull it off. We havent got that at the moment. Besides the obvious skill errors the biggest difference is the kicking skills. We have so many players who cant kick it 50 m. Hawthorn have 10 or so who can kick it over 50 with no effort. That makes a huge difference in games.

Hawthorn went easy on us after quarter time. No Franklin in the second half. Its going to be another long season.

We will be better. I believe we will be better in the ruck and defence but the HF line is terrible and we have know system going into attack.

Yep its ony February and we are a work in progress but I reckon some tough decisions will have to be made at years end.We held off too long on Whitnall. Some of our named players better deliver 08 style otherwise they should be looking elsewhere in 09.

Hopefully Judd can make a real impact. Lets hope we play him when he is 100% fit and dont rush him back due to an act of desperation.

When we missed the first few shots I always it quickly became ugly - would have been quite different had we nabbed them (at least 2 and possibly all 3 were from set shots and very get-able). Not surprisingly confidence returned once we finally got that first goal.

positives
kreuzer showed a bit
gibbs - fantastic 3rd quarter
jamison/grigg - continues to show signs
houlahan - some fantastic F50 entries to set up shots on goal

negatives
murphy's/fev's disposal way down when compared to what we expect
fev - a bit too much focus on bumping at times to show aggression rather than tackle
pfeiffer much quieter than last week
russell, edwards, - unsighted
lacked forward structure without fisher - looked a lot better when waite was there

Good loss, perfect in fact.

Not sure why Bower is getting criticised by a few. He gets better every week, will be a good long term player.

From what I can gather it was a poor enough performance.
However, now with training games and maybe intra clubs, management can stop play, direct, instruct and change and improve things as they happen.

So that 4 weeks of specific improvement, full time,

meanwhile a national audience saw us get beat and makes errors.

The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist.
