Scappy but intense game. Skills in a competetive game are a bit harder to execute than at training

Hey you may find this funny - went out to dinner with the company at the snootiest dinner in Beverley Hills you could imagine. I went to the dinner and ordered a beer and put it in my old Carlton stubby holder... The company & waiters were horrified.

Go Blues.

Pfeiffer looks the goods. Edwards can take a contested mark also. Some good signs.

For what its worth here is some comments on the game and our future:

Happy the footy is back!!

Hampson: Great skill and agility, will be a star in a few years.
Fev: Good discipline play hope he keeps it up, fitness needs to improve
Waite: People will disagree but for mine an absolute waste at CHB! We have people who can fill that position in Bower, Thornton, Jamison, Setanta, Austin etc why use Waite and make him a defensive player. The guy is a matchwinner. Would prefer him as a loose forward (Will take a opposition good player and take pressure off Fev & Fish) with time on the ball? Can go back when required.
Ellard: as in juniors a ball magnet, will be a cult hero
Pfieffer: Looked good, will add to runners
Betts: Is he fit enough for AFL? Uses the ball well when he gets it, we need him fit.
Thornton: Behind Jamison, Bower Waite & Setanta as key defender, didn't mind him as a forward, could be a Russell Morris type?
Kruezer: Very exciting
Jackson: Ball magnet
Stevens: Will need time to get back into it, not a leader in my opinion
Simpson: Born Leader, very underrated
Grigg: Looks a natural HBF, uses ball well and will get better
Russell: A worry, looks good in bits but doesn't do enough for me
Cloke: Will contribute and handy but is not a star
Carazzo: Will continue on from last year, excellent aerobic capabilities
Gibbs: Looks bigger and more confident, great skills
Edwards: Not a fan to one dimensionable for me.
Armfield: Hard and will be goer in defence or tagging, lot to like
Houlihan: Will step up this year with good players around him, need his disposal skills
Murphy: All class but bloody ordinary today!
Bower: Was more disciplined than I have seen him before, could fill CHB if he keeps improving
Saddington: Too small for big guys to small for quick guys, a worry
Wiggins: Did he play?
Scotland: Typical game from him, runs well from defence and uses ball well. Like to see him use right foot more.

Overall, Good pressure which we lacked last year. Seemed to play for each other more.Using the ball better into forward line although still needs improvement. Lot to like and a definite improvement on last year.

Will improve as year goes on and adding Judd, Hadley, Walker, Setanta etc will make a difference.

Need work at the stoppages. Crumbing forward??

Lots of options in most positions which will serve us well.

Ruck options of Hampson, Cloke, Kruezer should combine well and can all play up forward.

Although we didn't beat much it was away and a win will be great for our confidence. Winning is a habit.

Haw/Syd will be a good game for us.

Stevens not a leader, Simpson is best option for me behind Judd!

Exciting times ahead in 2008.

Hows this for a line up for Rd 1 2008 against Richmond.

B: Armfield Setanta Jamison
HB: Grigg Bower Scotland
C: Walker Carazzo Simpson
HF: Fisher Thornton Stevens
F: Waite Fevola Houlihan
Foll: Hampson Judd Murphy
Int from: Cloke Gibbs Hadley Anderson Kruezer Jackson Betts Pfeiffer (can't fit them all in?)

Not Bad??

Solid hitout. Regardless of the opposition it's just good to see us get a win at last. Interesting that Murph and Pearce, the two young guns, both had shockers today.

Very impressed with the younger guys today. Hampson, Edwards, Pfeiffer, Ellard, Jamison, Armfield all did themselves proud. Waite has to be BOG after that effort. I think the debate about whether or not to play him at CHB can be put to rest. The defense was pretty solid all-round actually, except for a few lapses.

Port killed us in the clearances though, and our kicking needs to improve. How many goals did Port kick out of ruck contests?

Agree with most of it 69. Disagree about the Waite call. I think he is our best rebounding option there. Sure Bower Grigg Jamieson can play there however IMO they dont hurt the opposition as badly as Waite.

Cloke cannot ruck - decent around the ground but horrible at ball-ups and throw ins.

Hampson looks very promising

Waite still needs to learn to do the simple things consistently.

We have an exciting future but it won;t fully reveal itself this year.

Waite does the job asked of him, anywhere on the ground.

Can't expect any more than that.

Lucky that the best clearence player in the comp is waiting in the wings

Loved the work of Pfeiffer, especially early on. He definately comes into round 1 calculations after that effort. Jamison is going to be a beauty and he's improving with every game he plays. Ellard is definately a goer and would deserve the opportunity to be our second nominated rookie. The Hammer is going to be a superstar, and Bret was a hero up forward

The good thing to come out of this match was that none of our established players, bar Waite, Bret and maybe Scotland, played well or had any kind of impact. It was all down to our youngsters. Great signs from an otherwise meaningless game.

Maybe he might be a horses for courses issue, I would just hate to lock him into CHB?
