I had a nightmare.

Fast forward to the year 2020.

Murphy, Gibbs, Walker, Kreuzer are all retiring. They got close to playing in a premiership so many times. Once within 1 goal. We made three grand finals and two preliminary finals, but could never snag the premiership. With those four retiring the experts were predicting we would have to bottom out to rebuild our list, and our next premiership opportunity would be at least 5 years away. It was 2020 and everyone was thinking about the painful grand final losses and how those four players wouldn't join the pantheon of Carlton legends to play in premierships. They would still be Carlton legends, just without the customary premiership medallions. Funnily enough the eight wins in 2008 didn't come up that much.

Better still create a board for tanking so those who want to discuss it pre-season can do so.

I understand all the arguments for it but now is certainly not the time or the place.

Deliberately engineering losses for whatever reason is a disgrace and in direct contrast with which the spirit of the game we love should be played.

I dont for a minute doubt we threw the game against Collingwood last year when we dragged Fev when we had momentum. I accept what was at stake and feel embarressed that the league has reduced us to this level.

What I can take though as a positive from that game is the fact we had their measure with a less than full strength side and they were within a hair and a beesdick of going thru the the GF. They were the only side that took it up to Geelong when it really mattered.

As a club the players would have seen this - and since then we have Stevo back - Judd - Special K and a host of other potentially talented players on board and even less dead wood than in many a year - we know there will be heartbreak this year but I for one believe that we have turned the corner and the most crucial piece missing is instilling some pride, belief in oneself and ones teammates, agression, confidence and blatant bloody minded determination to win at all costs back into the spirit of the club.

We will begin our climb this year and everyone will be taking notice.

Finally the other thing that really adds the cherry on top for me is in these years of misery what have Collingwood, Essendon* or Richmond done?

Sweet F.A. 8)

Carlton legends without premiership medallions... Sound like St Kilda players. Stay off the drugs. You really do sound like a nathan buckley supporter. What the @#$%&! happened to Judd?

Once the season starts it is back to hoping (albeit very painfully) that we lose. It is vital we get two top three picks this year.

What kind of supporter truly would want Carlton to again do badly before the season starts? Who do you really support?

Someone who wants to see multiple premierships. SOmeone who wants to look back on this year not as a 2004 when we won 10 games( 10 meaningless games) and missed out on Deledio and Franklin, but as a year when we truly played our kids, and got two top three picks. (As Hawthorn did in 2005, excellent example. Set the stone for their later development).

..and if we did as hawthorn have, and in 2004 got delidio and franklin, there's every chance we would have played better and could have missed out on murph, and gibbs the following year, possibly even kruze.. ..at some point, yer gonna have to start winning.. ..or your team will walk..

Getting back to the game, here's who I think they should play

Shaun Grigg — Setanta Ó hAilpín — Bret Thornton
Heath Scotland — Jarrad Waite — Ryan Houlihan
Kade Simpson — Nick Stevens — Paul Bower
Jordan Russell — Adam Hartlett — Bryce Gibbs
Eddie Betts — Brendan Fevola — Cameron Cloke
Shaun Hampson — Andrew Carrazzo — Marc Murphy

Mark Austin, Jordan Bannister, Ryan Jackson, Matthew Kreuzer, Aisake Ó hAilpín, Simon Wiggins

going on the training reports i think bentick should be included just so we can get a bit of a look at how much difference his slimmer frame makes (possibly instead of a seasoned player like scotland but it wont happen cos he'll probably be used to help out with instructions etc.). i also remember something about fev not being played in the 1st game but i don't know how he's progressed after his 3 ops. maybe they could play edwards instead of him.

I also think Jamieson will play, maybe at Setanta's expense.

It'll be interesting to see how we line up and whether anything can be taken from it...probably not, but if someone like Armfield plays or starts on the ground it'll be a strong indication that we'll be seeing lots of him this season.

Houla at HFF for Russell - Jordy did stuff all in RSA and must earn his spot.

Bower to take Houla's spot on HBF and maybe Ellard for the bench as his run maybe handy vs Port at AAMI. Hopefully he's our Robbie Gray for 2008.

With Fish expected to play half a game, I'd be surprised if Jake didn't get a run on the bench for insurance. We must experiment a bit in this game and that means no Wiggo for mine.

Missed no Jamo and agree 100%, you would have to play him - great match up for Westhoff. Santy to the bench for Aisake.

Coz you say so? It's the way the system is designed. Brisbane won three in arow because they were the beneficiaries of generous AFL handouts, both financially and in draft and zone recruitment concessions. That's how you win a few in a row. You get alot of gun players in. Gun players = Murphy Gibbs Kreuzer Judd. We need a couple more and we're ready for an era of dominance. And trust me it will mean a hell of alot. We can get four premierships clear of Essendon* if all goes our way.
