the most encouraging this for me is the performances of A. Hartlett and S.Hampson.

Glad to hear the following:

- no injuries
- Hartlett, Russell and Hampson all played well
- Stevens got through half a game with no problems

Overall I'm quite pleased.
flower me dead - I'm shocked that there were no injuries: check this out from the Tele this morning

And this flower "struggling for support" headline .. wtf?! They got 3500 people to this match on the weekend, and got 12 000 to a Rugby League match in the US .. that didn't get "struggling for support" sh.t!!

Two positives
1 hartlett does the job up forward. Our CHF. Lets hope the hammies hold up Harts
2 Hampson The guy has lots to work on but the big upside is when he is in the ruck he is going to get his hand on the ball first nearly every time. We havent had that since Harry Madden

Here are some key points i see:

-Judd, Fevola, Walker, Fisher, Hadley all missing, Freo was missing Farmer

-Freo played 24 blokes meaning less interchange with everyone getting a decent run whereas Carlton had 32 blokes (6 rookies) all had game time.
Most players got at least 15-20mins. thats preety good considering we had 16 on the bench.

-Murph, Hammer, Harts, Russ in our best all positive for us and Freo had the usual suspects in Headland, Crowley, Johnson, etc. We gave all the young kids the run of the show against Freos best.

-Hammer done well against the strongest ruckman in the league

-Even Ellard our 3rd pick rookie played well.

I reckon there were alot of positives from the game, the results means crap all. Criticism can't start until Rnd 1. When the best team possible is on the track playing where their supposed too.

So Pavlich and Bell played? No mention of them in the reports I read.

It was but remember it's more like a VFL game then a AFL game with big names out and no points.

Even against Sandilands?! I'd love to watch the game just to see how the young guys tackle the best tap ruckman since Bananaby French. :P

Damn I wish we had Sandilands. Then we could transfer his football knowledge to Kruezer and throw the husk away. :-D

What I like about Hampson was hearing about how much work he put in between the end of the H&A season and pre-season, when most of the guys were taking rests and having fun, he was off the grog and keeping his mind and body sharp. When he showed up for pre-season training, he was ready. That shows that the kid's got a terrrific attitude and really wants to make the most of what could be a very lucrative opportunity.

The guy probably hears all the time about how good the midfield is, but the only thing that keeps it from being in the elite is a solid ruckman. That if we had someone like Cox, we'd be a powerhouse. He would realise that the opportunity is there if he wants it, because he's got Ackland (need we say more), Cloke (solid, but slow, under an injury cloud and lacking in height) Aisake (who is still learning the game), Jacobs (hasn't really done much to impress the judges so far, and is a ranga ;) ) as his opposition, and that the chances of developing an elite ruckman from that group is very slim. He's the real hope, and I think he knows it.

He's no doubt been told by the coaches that he could be part of something very special, and could turn out to be that icing on the cake. Some would buckle under such pressure, but Hammer seems to have embraced it. He'll take many hits this year, but no doubt he'll learn much, and if his attitude over pre-season is anything to go by, he'll keep at it until he's one of the best in the comp.

Good post and I agree with most of it.

Hampson shirt fronting Bradley like a footballer is more pleasing than his performance in the ruck. 8)

It's encouraging that Hampson isn't afraid of body contact and jumping straight at the big blokes when he's an athlete who changed codes.

Great start to the gallery: Fev gave his boots to a young South Australian player and then let him keep them Image

Bloody excellent to see Nick on the field again!!

Look at this, Kreuzer winning the tap .. what was that about our midfield?!

Bloody hope Campbell goes down for this

More GOLD from Hammer

Who did Desi swap his guernsey with?

From what I've seen so far of the game, all I can say is that if I were a foreigner watching the game for the first time, listening to Jason Bennett's commentary would leave me with less clue about the game than I had before.
