Don't sweat it folks.

He has hardly trained all pre-season, so I doubt he will have much impact at all this year.

I can see him being in contention for a senior game after around R5, and struggling for the rest of the year to really cement his spot. Expect Hampson might surpass him if given a chance, which he will.

Total waste of money and list space.

Like everyone else, I am yet to see Cain Ackland distinguish himself in a Carlton jumper.

But if you want to put a positive spin on things, here goes:

1. He can only improve

2. He played his footy at St Kilda as a ruckman, under a bloke who thinks ruckmen have little or no value in footy.

3. He comes to Carlton into an environment where the previous ruckman (Barnaby) had basically had enough (have you ever sen a bloke happier about retiring).

4. He comes to play under a coach under whom the players despised, into an environment of low morale.

5. The same coach had managed to turn Corey McKernan (another ruckmen) from a superstar to a bumbling wreck at Nth Melb, then transformed back into a very good player under Brittain after about 6 weeks, only to return to bumbling mess again in 2003.

I doubt that Cain will be remembered in the same breath as Steve Waugh when it comes to steely resolve, but just maybe this year he will be presented with an environment that will extract his best.

Sure, he should just play well anyway, but if ever circumstances and environment could turn around a players fortunes, Carlton 2008 is the opportunity for Cain, and hopefully we will all be pleasantly surprised.

I don't think Pagan can be blamed for McKernan, as McKernan started his career as a nobody under Pagan and became an absolute superstar under Pagan, and he was brilliant at his best.

Once he got a little older, McKernan fell apart.

McKernan struggled with the heart side of things.

Played his best footy floating around the forward line while a certain Mr W Carey had the entire opposition backline on him.

The minute he had to be accountable he went missing. Never has a player been less deserving of the reputation he had.

Still, he tore us a new one in the last game of '99.

We only have ourselves to blame for that.

I think McKernan always struggled with the fact that he was never going to be Wayne's replacement. Always played well in tandem with him, but like Laurel and Hardy, hardly showstopping as a solo act. Was never a game breaker at the Roos, and always struggled with the pressure of being considered as one. The proverbial chocolate soldier. Footy's equivalent to Ian Baker-Finch or Greg Norman.

He would have been good in combination with Sticks.
