Buried at the end, but not quite as "headline grabbing"
Quote:
“So it’s a pretty tough decision for the board, but I think it’d either be out of Stevo or Juddy, and the other four will be under them and help them as best we can.”

It's what makes Fev likeable, he's approachable, will talk honestly and generally not say anything otulandish (despite how it may be represented).

He should've said
"well we don't have any idea who will be captain"
"there's a long way to go yet"
"we'll learn from this"
....and everyone will just groan and start to hate him!

Why not a 3 man leadership group?

Captain
Vice Captain
Deputy Vice Captain.

Simple!

I bet money has something to do with it...

It's pertty simple, because a team of 40 needs more than 3 leaders! Plus giving players responsibility empowers them.

Teague and Skinny are leaders also don't forget.
Making every player get and sustain a part time job would empower responsibility.

I wouldn't have hated him!! :P I don't mind if Fev sacrifices some of his media image as a lovable rogue if it means the whole club is publicly singing off the same hymn sheet...

Admittedly, he did also mention Stevo and Simmo in the interview - but he gave up to the media the quote they wanted (ie. "Fev says 'Judd should be our captain'") - they were always going to go with that headline....you can blame the media to a certain extent in that situation, but Fev should know better.

It's not the end of the world, but I just think we didn't need it, and it's little things like that good leaders don't do.

Will history be made? Has a Carlton Captain ever come from another club?

Scotland was on 3AW Sports Tonight this evening and he echoed Fev's comments and thought Juddy was favorite for the captaincy......

The players voted these guys in to the leadership group.

I'll back their judgement of who's a leader of this team over a bunch of Internet geeks any day. :P

Why on earth do we have a West Coast player in our leadership group?

Have I missed something?

I wonder how Stevo and Simmo (and Judd for that matter) would feel about hearing Fev say in the media today that Judd is the man to captain the club? I don't reckon Fev needed to come out and say that right now... The time for quotes like that to appear from Fev is after Judd is appointed.

It's probably inevitable that Judd is made captain, but why can't Fev play a straight bat and repeat what Ratten is saying (ie. "we haven't decided yet, we have several good candidates, whoever is going to be captain needs to prove themselves before Round 1")?

every man and his dog knows Fev wants Judd captain.... he tells everybody...

Just like Kouta backs Stevo...

Judd will be captain.....!!!... he is a shoo in... and has been for a long long long long time.... ever since he crossed over.. and probably just before..

Yes, you have. Judd's a Richmond player.

I agree with you, and I don't disagree with what Fev is saying. I only have an issue with the timing of it.

There's nothing wrong with keeping private opinions in-house sometimes.

If the club is saying (publicly) "We'll be making the decision as late as possible....we're giving all the guys in the leadership group a chance to prove themselves before Round 1, no decision as been made yet...." etc, surely the players should be singing that tune in the media too. If/when Judd is appointed would have been the perfect time for Fev (and the other players) to come out strongly in support of him.

The club is trying to sell the Carlton captaincy as a prestigious and much sought-after honour in footy again.

They can't be seen to be handing the captaincy to Judd on a platter without appearing to put him through a 'process', and appearing to give an established Carlton player (Stevens) a fair chance to prove his worth. If they can't manage to do that while presenting a united front, maybe they should just announce it's Judd now and get on with it.

As I've said before, it's not the end of the world....but I wish the headline this morning was "Coveted Carlton captaincy still up for grabs" or "Carlton leaders vie for captaincy honour"...

....instead we got "Fev says give it to Juddy".

Oh right, well no surprise there I guess, they were in the box seat.

I'm absolutely rapt for Carrots breaking into the leadership group. What a perfect example of rewarding someone who continually works his backside off to get the best of himself all the time. He has mentioned in interviews that he knows he isn't blessed with great skill or pace etc but he continues to work extremely hard, within his capabilities to be successful.

I think there are others ahead of him for the captaincy but if this is not leadership then I don't know what is.

If I understand the process correctly the players have picked their leadership group and it will be the match committee/coach who will nominate a captain from that leadership group for the board to ratify. Irrespective of what the players think who should be captain they are out of the process.
Perhaps you might need to attend lessons on what type of headlines sell papers. Fev actually says it is between Judd and Stevens.

I know what Fev said. Go back and read my posts. And I'm not interested in what sells newspapers, I'm only interested in what's best for Carlton.

The timing of Fev's comments is not a disaster, but it's not ideal either IMO. That's all I'm saying.

....and Judd will be a great skipper for us. :-D
