No surprises here except maybe Fev.

I think Murphy not being in it is a surprise. We were aware the Gibbs wouldn't be, but I think Murphy shows strong leadership credentials.

Nice to see Carrots in there though :)

After the year that Murphy had, I think he might enjoy a year off and just focus on his game and enjoying the exquisite scenary that will be our midfield this year.

Two stand-outs and one message...

1) Carrots and Simmo have taken the next step
2) Message to Fev as to what's expected (also note the Coleman isn't down on list of achievments)

The others are the obvious choice.

Smaller group makes a lot of sense...a group of 12 was way too many (leaves some thinking that the "others" will do it!)

Interseting that Waite, who was voted first for stand in captain last year is not in it. Brad Fisher, Bryce Gibbs, Marc Murphy, Bret Thornton and Simon Wiggins are others to miss out from last year.

Very happy to see a smaller group.

Also pleasing to see leaders who will be selected in the team week in week out; that's very important imo.

Unlucky to miss: Waite. But not upsetting.

Murphy and Gibbs can do without the pressure. They can concentrate on strutting their stuff for the team.

Leadership will do Fevola wonders this year; he has and can have a great influence on the kids. Now Fev, stay out of the headlines, kick a ton and lead by example.

Congrats to Carrazzo.

Would have thought Fisher and Waite would have been in the mix aswell.

I am pleased with the selection of players

Waite the glaring ommission who i thought was a bit stiff, but glad to see Fevola given the extra responsibility to assert himself as a leader of this football club.

Also pleased to see Murph and Gibbs released of the leadership burden for the time being, allowing them to develop and play football rather than worry about other shit.

In saying that you dont have to be part of a select group to lead the squad

Some interesting omissions and inclusions, as pointed out. All good signs though, in that, we have quality guys missing out. We're improving. ;)

That is a good list.

All are consistent performers.

The exclusion of Waite might have raised a few eyebrows, but not for yours truly. I like Waite, he is one of my favourite players, but the bottom line is his form can still be up-and-down, and the six players they have chosen have all shown they can now provide consistent performance.

It is a sign to Jarred that he still has a bit to go, irrespective of his third placing in the B&F last year.

Murphy's omission is a no-brainer. You shouldn't be in the LG for potential alone. He struggled last year (for reasons beyond his control in some cases), but the bottom line is he did not have a great 2008 and so it is hard to fathom giving him a formal leadership role.

Thornton is a consistent performer, but I don't think he is a 8/10 player.

Judd is Fevola's pick for captain

Quote:
As for the prospect of Judd, yet to play a match in the old dark navy blue, leading a club he is yet to play for, Fevola didn’t believe the players would have an issue with it.

“I don’t think it would matter,” he said.

He didn't struggle last year and he had a good 2007 under the circumstances.

The fact he carried the burden of being in our top 2 midfielders and was the #1 target for the opposition and still managed to have a good season speaks volumes about his ability to handle pressure.

He also accepted changing his role in the last 6 weeks of the season, without complaining or spitting the dummy.

I can accept him not being in the leadership to relieve him of some of that pressure or there being more suitable candidates, but can't accept it being because he doesn't deserve it.

thrylos7 said it, you don't need to be part of the leadership group to lead the squad. Murphy will still set an example and be followed by his peers.

A good group. Rewards those who had breakout seasons, while acknowledging the more experienced players. Good mix of youth and experience there. Of course any leadership with one C Judd in there is always gonna look good :-D

I wonder how Stevo and Simmo (and Judd for that matter) would feel about hearing Fev say in the media today that Judd is the man to captain the club? I don't reckon Fev needed to come out and say that right now... The time for quotes like that to appear from Fev is after Judd is appointed.

It's probably inevitable that Judd is made captain, but why can't Fev play a straight bat and repeat what Ratten is saying (ie. "we haven't decided yet, we have several good candidates, whoever is going to be captain needs to prove themselves before Round 1")?

Its only his opinion, whats wrong with that. He did also say that Stevo would make a good Captain as well.

Get off Fev's back. His honesty is just simply refreshing. You know where you stand with him.

Of course Juddy is the obvious choice, big deal.
