Judd is the only option. How can you have a premiership player, brownlow medallist, mvp, norm smith medallist in your team, without being captain?

What are you looking for in a captain?

A leader. On and off the field. A match winner. Someone who can handle the media.

We have no other candidate who fills all those roles.

Ok then... Wiggins or MAYBE Fevola. :-D

Seriously though, another aspect to consider is being able to captain and still play your A game - some people just don't perform at their highest capacity with the captaincy, other excel even further once they have that honour.

I know a fella that was handed the captaincy for a fair few games last year in Whitnall's absence that really lifted his game.

And it wasn't Fevola... or Wiggins.

Thats a good answer.

The three most likely candidates, Judd, Stevens, Simpson, have their strengths in different categories.

The off field stuff is as important as on the field stuff.

Don't get me wrong, Simpson and Stevens are pretty good, but they aren't in the same league as Judd.

Stevens has a presence about him, but his off-field woes will always be marked against him. Plus his neck could prove an issue.

Simpson leads from the front on the field, but I've never heard him speak.

When you choose a captain in this day and age, it's about the whole package. Someone who could sell the club, but also be as damaging on the field.

I voted for Simmo

Based on Ratts' announcement hereand here

Also on my comments about Stevo's future (which I can't find)

Surely give it to someone who has played a game for the club before.
I love that we have Judd, but lets not drop the ball here.

Simpson for me.

Lucky George Harris wasnt that thick with Barassi...

Its amazing to see that about half of you are silly enough to not think Judd will be captain....or not qualified somehow.... its as if we have premiership like leadership

........... its REALLY FUNNY...

he will shit in when the player vote comes through... absolutely shit it in...

yeah i can just see them following around Stevens and coppying his every move.......

Nothing agsinst Stevo but he aint Judd and he doesnt have the charisma as a person Judd has.... Judd is the man!!!... everybody wants to be Judd... they wanna play like Judd.. they want to captain a premiership side like Judd.. they want a gf like Judds...

With respect to Stevens and Simmo, Fev and Waite, and (one day it will happen) Murphy...I don't think anyone comes close to Judd for captain.

I suspect the abovementioned would agree to that too; it's that obvious.

Judd 2008-2012; Contracted bona fide Blueboy....and premiership captain of the 17th Flag....with some great deputies by his side.

It's amazing I'm writing this, but Synbad is surely the most rational person on this subject.

There is a precedent: Ern Henfry, who had played a couple of games on permit for us in 1944, joined our club in 1947 and was instantly made captain. We won the flag that year.

Throw in Barassi and Brighton Diggins, and they are three examples of people who captained in their first year, and two of them won premierships in that initial season. Barassi didn't, but I think we can still count him as a success.

Clearly the club's PR campaign is geared towards Judd being appointed to the role, and he is clearly a leader and inspiration.

Remember that Stevens couldn't get the nod ahead of Whitnall in 2007, and very few people disagreed at the time.

It would be insane to not have Judd as captain this year.

The ultimate outcome would be to have Judd as captain on the proviso that...

1. Judd genuinely wants the role without feeling pressured by the club to earn his price tag.

2. Seeing as he hasn't played a game for the club as yet, has the overwhelming support of the playing group.

If there are any doubts about either point, then IMO Stevens should get the nod.

I believe the club are delaying the decision to allow time for Judd to assimilate with the players, as he would be their choice for the role.

Well said JW.

hmmm, players who captained Carlton in their first game for the club. Would not be too many who did not go onto premiership glory I would think?

I sense another Blueseum article. 8)

Back to the topic, Judd by a country mile, silly even talking about it

I'm more in shock that someone chose Fevola OVER JUDD!!!!!!!
What are you people smoking?

Lets be serious. You wouldnt put Danny Bonaduce in charge of the Partridge Family.
Next we"ll be appointing Doug Hawkins to the reserve bank board.

Lets remove him from the options before someone notices and thinks we're serious! 8)

There seem to have been a million posts on this now... and in each one of them I've said the same thing...

it is an absolute no-brainer that Chris Judd will be captain of the Carlton Football Club in 2008.

Anybody who thinks any different is living in la-la land. Don't get yourselves worked up about it people.

Now... can we debate something else for the rest of the offseason, because this topic really and truly has been done to death.

enough mucking around. we all know stevo is finished in a few years, so he should not be captain.
the captaincy should not be passed around like a big bottle of smirnoff, and should be given to the right person at the right time. Judd is the man. Give it to Judd and lets really get behind him for the next decade or so and build a premiership team.

Imagine we won a flag before both Essendon* and Collingwood with Judd as captain, after everything we've been through. I would absolutely piss myself.
