I'm only talking about the type of player / skill level he has at the moment, clearly SO has the potential to be miles better, but he is not there yet, many people think he is, many people are wrong.

Once again I will say that I love his attitude, his desire and his efforts. But we, as Carlton fans overrate him at the moment.

apart from his potential (size etc) and his attitude - he isn't all that much different to Prenda.

KK we probably over rate all our players as do supporters of all teams, but you can't seriously suggest he is like Prenda. I liked Prenda and would have preferred retaining him over recruiting Ackland. He would have got flogged in the ruck but tried really hard. But Prenda had far less skill than Setanta currently possesses. He had no hope of holding gun forwards - remember his game against Pavlich - handled the ball poorly and was a worse kick, and not as good a mark. He was nowhere near as balanced and couldn't keep his feet the way Setanta does. Prenda had inferior reflexes and wasn't as quick.

We probably over rate Setanta, but the original qestiuon on this thread was whether Setanta would get a regular game this year. My question is who have we got on the list who is a better CHB or FB? The only quality tall defender we have is TBird who is better suited to smaller opponents especially with the hands in the back rule. Setanta is not the star we imagine just yet, but it is all comparative. He is the best tall defender we have. Hopefully Jamison and Austin will develop, but who else can we play on the gorillas?

well said Gerry, my initial comments were replying to someone who said he has been a success, as far as playing every week, I have no doubt that he will be one of the first pencilled in - purely based on his size and effort he puts in.

I bet most of us still hold our breaths when he gets the ball though as he is still getting used to the game and the skills required.

Setanta's skills crap all over Prenda's.

The only thing equally comparable is their endeavour. Both are/were fantastic.

As I mentioned previously he is my favourite player, yet even I hold my breath when he gets the ball hoping he wont stuff up. But I think its worth it because occasionally he does somethings that makes me go WOW!!! :o

And I can see how much potential he has.

The preacher and the gerriatric have hit the nail on the head between them. This is not about emotion or B&F votes, it is about being in the best 22 and/or being pushed out by somebody beter. IMVHO, he is not in our best 6-7 but as SOPM said, he doesn't have to be and as Gerry said, somebody better has to take his place. In a team where the holes were many, Setanta was asked to play FB, CHF/FF and Ruck. He acquitted himself serviceably in all positions. A player who is that versatile is very valuable and if he gets a chance to settle in somewhere he will be awesome. Let's not forget the only other players asked to consistentely fill multiple roles last year up front and down back were Waite and Houla, both of whome polled OK in the B&F. Setanta has one more pre-season under his belt and will be a better player for it. He will play every game next year if he is available, hopefully at FB or CHB, alhtough my preference is FB. Aisake is a different prospect and has to find a slot. He has to tear the VFL apart to get a game in the ones so it is up to him.

Like that snap goal where he got boot to ball as fast as a little rover :P :P

But seriously, give him a position for a month or so. No more shoving him around everywhere.

Of course he is not there yet. He has limitless potential, so to be there, he would need to be starring. But for where HE SHOULD BE in his career, he is... that equals a success. It's like saying Gibbs isn't a success because he is dominating games. That's not what we expect, because all we expect is that he get a few kicks, limit the opposition and learn the game.

Look at the end of the day, rating players is all about expectations. In my mind, Setanta has exceeded expectations. I think a fair expectation of him to date would be to have played 10-15 games and be showing good progress. He has done better than that. Kicking goals, pinching hitting in the ruck, learning the game and doing well in defence.

Maybe KK you have unrealistic expectations which makes your understanding of player development a little under par

Do you really think he stuffs up that much? He looks ungainly and I think thats what causes the hand in mouth stuff when he's about to kick, but I think, while not always pretty, its pretty effective.

Wouldn't mind seeing a comparison of his % of possessions to turnovers to other players to see whether my view is accurate.

Im just waiting for the day we play as a cohesive unit and players are playing for the team not as individuals as in the past few seasons.

When this happens watch for Setanta to spoil the mark of a leading full forward pounce on the loose ball and put the hammer down and run out of defence through the centre and nail a long bomb. Not because he was an indidual but because he had team mates around him put on shepherds and hits for him becuase they trust his jusdgement to make those runs.

Jeez im looking forward to round one when he towels up Richo

He did all that to Barry Hall (bar nailing the long bomb, put the ball down fev's throat from memory) last round of 2006, that shocking game against Sydney at the SCG.

Carlos is special - make no mistake.

Nah the best thing he's done is nail a 50 metre pass down field, but diagonally across to a Matty Lappin running onto it - perfectly weighted to his advantage. Sadly Lappin dropped a relatively easy mark, otherwise it would've definitely been a feature for the highlight reels. It was a beautiful pass.

Come on guys...

How can you go past selling candy to Matthew Lloyd up on the wing? :-D

One other piece of play that stood out for me was against Melbourne, where he had about touches on the HFF before kicking a long goal, then ran back to the centre doing the fist pump (was it a double fist pump?).

Its moments like those you hope his enthusiasm rubs off on everyone else.

We don't have turnover figures in the Blueseum but we do have Goals and Behinds data, and 13 goals 3 is a nice output for a sometime half forward, sometime ruckman, sometime defender.

I think you will find this was against the bulldogs, but he didn't kick the goal?

Note that clangers take into account free kicks given away; Setanta had 21 free kicks against so his total clangers excluding free kicks against was 42.

Wow............

i can't believe anyone here would doubt Setanta.............!

this boy has left his family behind to follow his
dream........a dream to play a game that is more foreign to him....
than a long skinny piece of wood in an eye socket...........!

we not only need to be patient...........but we need to
be thankful.........thankful that the boys O'hAilpin....have chosen
our great football club to grace..........!

%$#@ ME.........anyone remember when Setanta kicked that
goal against Port.....the one where he grabbed it out of the
ruck and snapped.......?

we where wearing the away strip..........!

that.......is what the boys are bringing to our club..........the
greatest enthusiasm and passion a man could have.........!

these boys are blessed for sure.........but not as blessed
as what we are............!

kindest regards tommi

and just wait till..."Buddy" Asaike starts getting a game............!
