We always knew we'd win a gf beforehand if playing them. That's gotta count for something.

he certainly has BOUGHT much at carlton. also brought a bit too.

some people might suggest you do not need a reason but i have not seen any compelling arguments or reasons as to why you hate collingwood.

how many of you understand the true suburban rivalry that the current hatred was built upon?

Well how about you tell us about it - it'd be good to hear an opposition supporter's perspective.

The supporters.

But let's face it. You guys should hate us more.

We've actually achieved something in the last 50 years.

I have to say collingwood has been #1 on my list all my life but I lived in Perth for the eagles first 2 flags and that made them very high on my list. Over the last few seasons I must say the that Essendon* and their supporters that stand behind US and chant during games has put them on top.
I remember they had a chant about Whitnal eating all the sausage rolls....until I shouted out that it was "Riolli" that ate all the sausage rolls...that put an end to that chant. :)

Many of us have an acute knowledge of it Polar, as many Collingwood supporters would attest to, and feel the same in return.

My father grew up in Carlton in the 30s, when footy was a truely suburban game. Two working-class suburbs, side-by-side, in the shadows of the great depression. Even then, the rivalry was strong, and the 1938 GF added to it.

There were other rivalries too back then, FItzroy had strong ones against it's neighbours, but Fitzroy was already starting to struggly, hadn't won a Flag since 1922, and would only win one more.

Collingwood and Melbourne developed a strong rivalry in th 50s, but even then, at the back end of Melbourne's success, Carlton and Collingwood were still recognised as thhe arch rivals.

And then came 1970.

I went to my first game in 1975, aged 7. At that point, legend of the 1970 grand final was dominant, and my earliest memories were how Carlton and Collingwood were the VFL's oldest fiercest rivals, and how all my Carlton mates and Collingwood mates would give it to each other. St Kilda supporters were laughed at, and Essendon* completely irrelevant as a rival. The only club that came close to Collingwood as a true hated enemy was Richmond.

Add to that the '79 and '81 grand finals, and a host of other finals, the Jezza - Magro incident, Harmes knock on, Ralph's miss...

I even pulled out of the family ski trip on the last weekend in September, 1980, to go to the GF to 'make sure' that Richmond beat Collingwood, such was my dislike of them.

I don't think I know a Carlton supporter above mid-30s in age who wouldn't say categorically that Collingwood is the most despised enemy, and with very good reason.

Interesting that the last time we had this poll, I remember the consensus being split down the middle between the filth and scum, but they were the only options that time. This time, it appears that the aints, dawks et al have stolen the scum's thunder a bit.

The legendary rivalry started in 1910 Grand Final - which was a very spiteful encounter and is the ONLY Grand Final that Collingwood has ever beaten us. The remaining Grand Finals 1915  1938, 1970, 1979, 1981 - we were triumphant. 8)

As for skullduggery - I think it was written in "The BlueBoys" that in the 1938 Grand Final - all Collingwood players who were working at the Carlton & United Breweries were given the Saturday Morning off by the Brewery Foreman who happened to by Collingwood Coach Jock McCale - he generously did not give the same leave to the 3 or 4 Carlton Players on duty that morning and they had to rush directly from the Brewery to the MCG - with only minutes to spare.

I think we won that game. 8)

Psst - Aggers - you missed 1915.

And two of the Collingwood players had to go on 10 mile marches the morning of that game. Suckers.

Why is Collingwood at the top of my list???

Becuase my parents were at the MCG for the 1970 GF (Along with every other man and his dog).
Enough said.

it has to be Essendon*. just can't stand them. i actually get angry watching other teams play them, let alone when we play them.

had the pleasure of sitting behind their shit cheer squad at the 99 prelim. having to endure theri smug taunts at 3/4 time and then nearly getting my head ripped off when the siren went.

the sweetest thing about it was lining up at the arts centre the next day to get our GF tickets and watching the dumb arrogant pricks coming to get their chairs and shit that they had stuck 'in the line' in the belief that making the GF was merely a formality.

good times...... good times
