Interesting to read that Waite will spend most of his time in defence next year.

Agree to me that leaves a huge whole at CHF. The other interesting snipet is that the players ran out of legs last year.

Throw the 199cm irish montser at CHF!

Re Ratten: sounds like the players are really enjoying having him as coach and sound refreshed. I just heard a 15 second grab on SEN of Pagan talking about the Roos/Gold Coast thing - he is so bloody boring to listen to, cliche after cliche, players must have gine mad listening to him prattle on for years.

I always find it funny that people think Kennedy left a huge hole in our forwardline when he barely played a game, and when he did he played as a forward pocket rotating off the bench.

My question is this:

Is the conventional spine actually relevant in todays game?

I believe that a team should have a good power forward, or someone to get over 70 goals. We have Fev. Another tallish forward to get above 30 is very handy. We have Fish. They are our two tall forwards. Who cares that we don't have a 196cm battering ram?

Basically my point is this. We need a big guy, a leading guy, a medium guy and a little guy. This can be applied in some way to defense. We don't need a set FB and CHB, we need the right players to play on the field to make the right matchups. When we play the Western Bulldogs, should we put Setanta on Scott Welsh? I don't think so.

So I don't think there is a hole at CHF, because as Andain's point suggests, JK wasn't filling one in the first place.

Fisher is not a CHF

Synbad, who is the guy you would expect to play the toughest position in the AFL outside of Waite or even more importantly who has actually displayed that they can do the job for 22 weeks?

I think the days of a permanent CHF have gone. Sides go with rotating forward structures. There's usually "dominant power forward" on each top side but the days were teams would rely on Brereton, Kernahan, Carey, Hart to play at true CHF in a traditional CHF role.

Nowadays it's about creating space, and having one dominant forward playing anywhere in the F50, whether in a pocket, out of the square or at CHF is just as effective.

We have a power forward in Fevola. I think that Setanta showed signs that he could be similar, he is aggressive enough, he is mobile enough, he is becoming very sure in his marking. His kicking is improving out of sight.

Setanta for CHF!

Setanta and Aisake cannot play CHF because they cannot read the play. Next.

Kreuzer? Hammer? would cause massive match-up headaches.

Not next year, however long term I believe Kruezer will be the guy.

Hartlett just hasn't shown enough and can't stay on the park for mine.
Edwares similar to Harts. Forget the Irish or the kids as such for now.
Cloke will struggle but might be a more stay at home CHF with Fisher moving further down the wings, the only other combination available.
We need Waite to play CHF. The only one capable for 22 + rounds.

You obviously didn't see their performances, Setanta in particular.

He showed a bit as a lead-up HF.

And you think that Kreuzer can in the long-term when he's only just been drafted?

More pearls of wisdom from Surrey  :garthp:
