Patrick Smith, Senior Sports Commentator, The Australian.

Sports life: I grew up in Glen Iris and played full forward in school footy, but I was better at cricket. I was chosen for the under age Victorian Second XI and played district cricket for Prahran in the 1970s as a fast bowler.

Sports high: Being a very competitive bowler at district level for ten years.

Sports low: In 1976 I was suspended for two weeks after a clash with a batsman. It was very early in the innings. I followed through and chested him to the ground.
Sports dream: I'd like to relive that moment that I was suspended for and not make the same mistake.


Is that not bringing the game into disrepute?
The man was a notorious cheat and bully and then, as now could not handle losing. He is an utter disgrace.

His day's already come year's ago clearly and he's been living out a bitter existance ever since.

His days as a district cricketer must've been where his life peaked and he keeps looking back like Al Bundy due to the desperate nature of his journalism.

During those days he probably never had to live in the shadow of his brother (who happens to be a fantastic person) because he thought being a district cricketer was all that.

The issue is not that he has once again bagged Carlton.

It is whether he has defamed Richard Pratt by comparing him to Mokbel, an alleged murderer!

This is what Mark H was alluding to. This is what the club and Pratt's lawyers are considering.

It is not a matter of being shitty about him bad mouthing Carlton - it is the way that he did it and the comparisons he made.

Comparing Dick Pratt to a lowlife murderer/drug trafficker/fugitive with a bad wig may have been funny in his head. But the rest of society are not demented old fools. Its completely unprofessional, and a digraceful attempt at getting attention. I think its very likely he'll lose the SEN gig at the very least. His Australian column may be next.
Dick Pratt is a respected, respectable leader of the community. He made a huge error in judgement which he has to shoulder. But he's not a target for Smith's warped and snide humour

The trouble is the pen is often mightier than the sword. And in his realm he will always get the final say. By people going off half-cocked (you see what I did there!) with name calling it just gives him carte blanche to label Carlton supporters as a bunch of ferals who aren't able to argue the point.

Journos always get the last say.

It was great hearing supporters of other clubs call in and say they would usually support Smith, but that they did object to the Pratt-Mokbel comparison, even if KB would say "right, so that's a big tick for Patrick there".

If nothing else, he should think twice before making such inane comments again in future, regardless of who his target is.

Hahaha, Patrick Smith is both a bully and a terrible journalist with zero credibility. Could you find two less respected media outlets than The Australian and SEN? His senior peers include Greg Denham and Kevin Bartlett...

I just thing it is worth a brief summary point by point why Smith is so wrong.

a) No one disputes DP broke the law. It is a very long bow to say because you broke the law you are not fit to be President

b) DP broke the civil law. This was not a criminal case. His offence is not as heinous as Ben Cousins or Tony Mokbel

c) Patrick Smith believes DP is not fit to be President because he cheated Australians to the tune of 700 million dollars. This assertion is wrong because
1) The 700 million is figment of the medias imagination
2) The real figure is closer to 60 million
3) None of that money would have been seen by an Australian Consumer as it would have been retained as profit by the purchasing companies

d) DP's primary responsibility is to his business' return

e) His actions were not within the law but in most people's view are less amoral than actions of gambling companies or telstra or the monopolistic activities of AFL catering companies

f) DP's actions do not effect effect the members, players & staff of the football club. Drug taking can spread through a club.

Finally, Patrick Smith is inconsistent. Why was he never as vocal when Ron Evans chairman of Spotless used his influence to benefit Spotless and cheat every AFL fan? Why wasn't he as vocal when Essendon* used the website rort to benefit Hird and Lloyd. I will tell you why because Patrick Smith has an inbuilt hatred of the Carlton Football Club and has not got the capacity to be consistent.

Can't get SEN at my joint, but it sounds like I'm missing out on jack shit.
