I never got tired of seeing Andy McKay running off the HBF around the back of the ruck contest, receiving the ball and pumping it forward.

Was at a dinner last night and Michael Voss spoke. Vossy said his toughest opponent from any club was McKay. Reckons he woke up game day thinking it was going to be a tough game and woke up the next day knowing it was a tough game. I reckon that is a pretty good reference for a great number 5.

Agree that McKay was our best number 5, but when I considered those who had worn the number, the first player that sprang to mind was Kenny Sheldon.

Ditto for me too George.

With a Carlton perspective:

From 28 players (soon to be 29) wearing it, we've had 7 Premiership Players in Guernsey 5. 4 cracked 100 games but only one - Andrew McKay - made it to a Best & Fairest.

What has Sammy Sheldon done to warrant Vossy's no.5 by the way?

Bugger all considering Voss wore 3

But he asked for it and they said "Yes". Seems fair enough.

I loved Macca powering off the half back line (would love a clone right now) but I reckon Syd Jackson eclipses him as the best navy blue no.5 I have seen.

Syd, Jezza and Crosswell made for one helluva forward line...

Kenny Sheldon.
Won the 79 after Harmes's effort.
Famed member of the CFC mosquito fleet.
Ablett was good but never won one.
Bucks ditto.
Nobody mentioned Polly Farmer, whom I think wore it and could play a bit. Better than G, Ablett, too.
There can be only one.

Ablett was better than good, he was arguably the greatest.

It's not his fault he never won one, you can't ask for more than 9 goals (Record) in his FIRST GF!

Ablett was one out of a box and i completely forgot about him wearing 5. He'd be even par with Hird for me.

Who was the best player to wear no. 5 for Carlton? I am just old enough to remember 'Midnight' running around the wing for Carlton. Syd Jackson had that 'x' factor. One of the most 'balanced' players to grace Princess Park. And boy could he move. Silky, swift, smooth as. To see the little fella pierce drop kicks at lightning speed was enthralling. Syd did all this despite the most vocal, poisonous, rancid, hateful abuse hurled at him during his few years at Princess Park. He was the ONLY aboriginal player in the VFL in his early days, and consequenely carried the judgement of his nation on his small shoulders. If you think that Collingwood supporters are feral now, you should have heard their putrid, racist, spiteful taunts then. Syd only played 7 few years at Carlton, his entry was stymied by WANFL pigheadedness. Before Winmar and Long, 'Midnight' stood out like a beacon. I urge you to keep an eye on him in the 1970 and 1972 Grand Finals. Syd played in two Premierships, finished 4th in the Best and Fairest twice, and was voted best clubman in 1975. He was loved by his club and by Blues supporters. Pure magic.
