Anyone else feel slightly disgusted that two companies equally enter into an unlawful price fixing arrangement, but one blinks first, dobs on the other - and then gets off scott free? What a way to screw your competition.

Not only do you get to price fix, you then corrupt the name of your competition and get away with all the plaudits (and possibly market share!)

The disgrace about this is that flowering Samuels, the same guy who stuffed Carlton chased Pratt for charging as high a price as he could to Fosters, who would never pass a cent on to consumers and he wouldn't chase the oil companies, Telstra or the retailers (who pound the famers). Samuels the pretty boy merchant banker who has never made a hard dollar in his life hit the one truly Australian manufacturing business between the eyes....the business that provides jobs and for 5000 Australians and reinvests the profits in this coontry. If the boxes were so expensive why didnt Fosters import them? Samuels had it in for Dick because he is jealous of creative Australians. His agenda was to close the the Victorian Opera (achieved), Carlton (nearly) Visy Board (good effort).

this irks me:

Quote:
Amcor is immune from prosecution because the company agreed to co-operate with the ACCC investigation, including facilitating recordings of secret meetings between executives of the two companies.

So it's virtually entrapment, I hope Amcor gets theres somewhere down the track - scumbags who were just as guilty but rolled over when they felt some heat.

Dick I wish you all the best in getting monopoly in this market and driving the opposition into a deep, deep grave

I don't agree one bit with what Pratt/Visy has done, and I won't deny my opinion of the man has taken a pounding because of this. However Amcor should also receive some sort of punishment from the weak as piss and crooked ACCC for their part in this. But I'm sure they'll be sued accordingly by the people they wronged, just as Dick sadly will :(

Maybe they could get "Stephen Orally" to do the rounds as a guest speaker and say what a fulfilling life it is to be a grubby filthy stooly.

Price-fixing is currently a civil offence punishable by fines

The point being that offences under the Trade Practices Act are civil offences, and therefore do not carry possible gaol terms as a result.

If Cardboard boxes were taxed, NO DOUBT Pratt would have escaped with barely a warning!

I'm sure they'll target the Supermarket monopoly next and break the strangle hold they have on small businesses.

Which is wrong. There should be jail terms involved.

Cousins, Pratt - there seems to be a spate of alleged illegal activity from AFL identities, wonder what the consequences will be?

Some Victorian based opperations already have admited it, but made suggestions that it was all just part of the industry.

It quite funny because as soon as people started to investigate it, the price of petrol went down by about $0.10c DESPITE oil going up.

I just don't understand it.

It says in the paper today:-
"Confesed price fixer Richard Pratt faces a $36million fine after a court heard he was a cheat who had betrayed the public"

I personally like the last bit.:- betrayed the public hmmmmm, cause you know, Petrol companies are just the most honest and trustworthy bunch aren't they?

I am NOT arguing that Richard Pratt's fine is too high, nor am i defending him because we all love him so much. What i am saying is that if the $36million fine is considered a 'Fair' punishment to somebody who has price-fixed cardboard bloody boxes then i would seriously like to know what would be considered a 'fair' and 'suitable' punishment for the companies that constantly bend us over each and every single day and blatently rip of the REAL public?

Sorry................. just a bit of a touchy subject for me.

Had budgeted for 10 times that amount...
He was ade an example of for other companies..
When they came to him with an offer he took it...

Low possibility the class action will get up...

Ryan - you should have sent in your submission to the ACCC inquiry into the price of unleaded petrol. The ACCC only monitor the petrol prices and the media has picked up on the ACCC media release in June in which the ACCC detected a substantial divergence between movements in domestic petrol prices and movements in the international benchmark price for refined petrol (i.e Singapore Mogas 95 Unleaded)...so when Singapore dropped it's price - and the prices in Australia kept rising - Peter Costello called for an inquiry...that process is now complete (it was a public inquiry and completely transparent) and a report went to the Treasurer on Monday October 15.

With oil prices currently going ballistic - I'm expecting you'll be paying considerably more for your petrol by Christmas...does that worry me - no...I went long on oil when it hit $65 a barrel and i think it'll get to $100 if North America has a cold winter. As for what happened back in June with the big petrol companies - my advice is to watch this space...something might just happen.

How is this related to Carlton? Not sure - but as green as he is - i don't reckon Chris Judd drives a Prius.
