Didn't Lance get away with cleaning up Stenglein when he was a Crow?

I don't recall the incident, but reports said Lance stopped dead and let Tyson run straight into his back who knocked himself out.

John Nicholls eat your heart out.

That's probably why Ricciuto got into him.

Outclassing Jakovich in the semi final in 99. Thought after that game he was going to be one of the clubs finest.

My favourite memory of Lance is probably 98 vs the Dogs - Lance was magnificent.

But 99 prelim was special too.

Thanks for some great memories Lance. Sorry you weren't able to be what so many others had hoped you would be.

Enjoy your retirement and the chance to get so many fickle supporters off your back.

cheers

It was a night game against the Dons a few years ago [2003?] when we were pretty much done and dusted and I remember him playing a major role in the second half and had Fletcher running in circles.

We ended up winning by about 3pts or something.

2005 it was mate. I remember nearly choking when i saw him go back to the defensive 50 and stood next to James Hird!...After Lucas and Hird had destroyed us in the first half, Lance went forward and put on a show and we came back and won by 7 or 8 points if im not wrong.

was it a night match? if so this is the same match we're thinking of.

I love lance, its no secret from reading my posts around here that i like the guy and was against Lance bashing. I'm sad to see him go, however i totally understand and quietly agree with the move. Hopefully he can stay at the club and offer something in an off field role as his footy brain is as good, if not better than any other i've ever seen.

The speccy he took in his last game wasn't bad

the day Croad towelled him up andd he moved forward and turned the game

the day he gave Barry Hall a bath at the Dome

and a game early on in his career against teh bombers where he took 18 plus marks and played a blinder

and of course the 99 goal

Whitnall is still the youngest player to reach 100 games for Carlton and he was only 22 when he broke Walls record.

Averaging more than a goal a game is no easy feat.

Had two truly awesome games at Optus Oval in 1998.
He blitzed against Hawthorn turning the game around when we were a couple of goals down. His 8 goal performance against the dogs a few weeks later was also brilliant.
I was convinced at the end of 1999 that he would be a better player then Stephen Kernahan.

Whitnall used to put blocks on for Lappin all the time in 1999-2000 and Stenglein used to play on Lappin.

Favourite memories have been covered

Debut game kicking 4 on Dean Wallis
8 goals against the Bulldogs
The 99 prelim final goal

Not many of recent times unfortunately, but Lance was an AA and deserves congratulations for reaching that level of play.

Anyone who plays a handful of games in Navy Blue let alone more than 200 deserves our respect, even if it's begrudging.

Lance played alongside some of the greats of our club. He was the Captain of Carlton. He was the Club's Best and Fairest.

Respect to ya, Big Red.

Sorry to see you go, but there's a new ruthless nature about our Club, and unfortunately, you were a victim of it. There's no room for sentimentality in footy any more.

You've just destroyed the cliche that Big Red needed Hamill alongside him to contribute to Carlton on the scoreboard. 8)

Played a blinder against Coll at the MCG in 2001. At one stage Carlton cleared from the centre bounce, he shepherded 2 Magpies players - 1 was Scott Burns I think - allowing Hickey to swoop & goal from 40. It was a great bit of play where he used all his strength to beat 2 opponents who were busting their guts to get past him.

Thanks Whits, shame it ended this way but I will remember the good games.

Has to be 99 prelim. He's had better games, but this was a magic moment, often forgotten due to Kouta's heroics and Fraser's tackle.

Feel free to just use the stat shot in the Blueseum, pblue - it allows all the links for people to read up.

http://www.blueseum.org/cfc/tiki-index. ... L+Whitnall

The 3 things I will use to summarise Lance's career are:

1. Leading goal-kicker and man mountain in 1998-2000, including 70 and 55 goals in 99 and '00. Lance, in his prime, and in a good team in '99 and '00, showed a lot of promise. This is what hurts us all - including Lance - what happened after that!?

2. Lance's H1 2006. After years in the wilderness, Lance's first half of 2006 was pretty special for mine. There was even a thread on TC about whether Lance was 'elite' or just in a patch of elite form. But he was very impressive - taking Barry Hall out of the game in Rd 3, delivering up forward against the Hawks in round 4 despite being beaten by Croad in Q1, being one of the key players in the Round 5 loss to Richmond (can you all remember feeling as though we'd lost when Pagan put him back to Richo?) and then killing Rocca as the Pies pantsed us in Round 6. Whitnall was delivering. Don't believe the gumph about Lance playing as a floating defender for all of 2006 - yes, he did in some games, but in early 2006 he was a rock and was performing admirably. Such a short time ago, but how much has changed.

3. And finally, the Whitnall flap. The what? That free kick for parking under a ball and dropping your head whilst someone takes a screamer over you, but YOU getting pinged whilst most others in the competition get away with it.... will we ever see this free kick again, or is it reserved for you?

I love his contribution to the 2005 Who Cares. As part of a potent forward line Lance and Fev won us that cup. I still remember the picture from the membership card of a victorious Lance holding Fevs' arm up high with pride.

Numerically, his best times were those which I wasn't here to see. Back when he was the club's leading forward and scorer in the late 90s.

I hope he goes out with dignity - he is my wife's favourite Carlton player.

No doubt his first 4 or 5 seasons were great. He was a breath of fresh air back then...
