Wow, that's good news. We must have re-evaluated the budget for the salary of that position. :P

Never cool enough to make it on the jumper/duffle coat (a beard/helmet combo will do that) but a seriously good player.

My first reaction was that "ashy" was McCartney.

If true, a great pickup. Was never the most gifted or talented player, but will certainly inspire loyalty from this young group and they'll listen to him well.

I don't think you saw much of him Donstuie.

If bad kicking is bad footy, and good kicking is good footy, then Ashman played good footy. He kicked both feet, and not all players could execute that skill effectively in that era like he did. One of the highlights for me was to watch Ashman line up from 50m and beyond...yea 50m, and unload his famour torps through the bis sticks; on wet and dry days. Now that's talent.

Check out blueseum for number of goals he kisked. He was a high possession player, and IIRC, he represented Victoria.

He was a very skilled rover, one of many in the famous 'mosquito fleet (s)'. He was a hard nut who put his head down and bum up, ready to take a knock, and took the heavy knocks and rode the heavy bumps on such a regular basis he eventually was one of the few players forced to wear the head gear for more protection.

Once the ball was on the ground, and in front of him, he showed similar skills to Leigh Matthews and Baldock; he had it in control and used his smarts and skills to evade and delude opposition kicking the ball to our advantage consistently.

Ashman was a legend, and premiership player.I could never split the group (mosquito fleet) when trying to rate the best of them; he was magnificent as were the rest of them.

He has also been magnificent around the club mentoring and coaching the kids.

Just filling in some gaps.

Actually I was talking about McCartney :P

Sorry about that Donstuie. I obviously read it differently.

Anyway, it was great to rekindle the feats of the great little man.

Ashman was stiff not to win the Brownlow in 1981 as well.

Missed out on the 1979 Premiership Side - which contained Buckley, Sheldon, Marcou, Harmes, because he was still a little out of favour due to contract dispute.

Never forget a game at Victoria Park in 1978 against "The Filth" - it was Jezza's first game as Coach after we had sacked Ian Stewart and Serge Silvagni had been Caretaker Coach for a few weeks.

We were on the bottom of the ladder and Collingwood were clear favourites to win - but we beat them on their own dung heap and Ashman played as a decoy Full Forward out of the goalsquare that day - I think he might have kicked 4 goals - and most of them were him going up for a mark one on one with his opponent and tapping them out the back and going back to rove his own tap outs - brilliant.

Ashman actually missed the 1979 Grand Final due to a hamstring injury sustained in the Second Semi Final v North Melbourne.
He only played 5 games in 1979 as for the first half of the season he was in dispute with the club and was trying to get to North Melbourne. Thankfully he returned and as noted earlier was stiff not to win the 1981 Brownlow. Could consider himself unlucky to come second to Ken Hunter for the B&F as well.

Jason McCartney as a development coach, Brett Montgomery as an assistant coach and Justin Cordy as one of our fitness gurus I'm guessing. Cordy is/was the strength and conditioning coach for the Australian cricket team - not bad I guess  Does anyone know more about him? Is he that good?

Anyway... are we meant to be getting two development coaches for next season? Have we got another one or is there still one appointment to go?

There is no mention of Justin Cordy in the link Ten - where did you hear about him?

When I read the article, it said:

Oh well. Ruined that surprise then, didn't they? :P

Julian de Stoop on FoxSports News just said we offered $250K to Laidley if things went belly up at North.

Can't say I'm unhappy we missed him and am surprised we chased him with that kind of money.

Surely the Roos will be back around 14th next year???
