Anyway good friday and Christmas day are usually the day the Video rental places get there biggest trade even think Cinemas are open on Good Friday

Personally i would rather go to the footy if a game was available even better if the Blues are playing

This is great news for the Carlton Football Club. Simple.

not having a crack at anyone, merely just trying to understand, so please don't take offence. for those who are opposed to the idea and indeed say they would not go, why is it the case. what is it that you would do instead of going to the footy? is it because of family commitments? or church commitments? or is it full day of reflection and prayer? i guess what i am asking is what does someone with more religious inclination than myself do with their good friday?

i don't understand the objections to going to the footy. whilst i don't eat meat on good friday and on occasions have gone to church in the morning, after that it tends to be a day of trying to find something to do other than watching the good friday appeal.

i really think it would be a boon for both clubs involved and an enormous money spinner for the good friday appeal. like i say i really don't understand the objections

its a great answer as to why Good Friday is such a dead (pun intended) day. There is going through the motions as a catholic/christian, and there is true observance.

I won't be attending, and I'll be trying to not listen in/watch the game :P , but I won't begrudge it if it happens as stated before in this thread.

I must admit I am surprised that Channel 7 seems to have been shafted in this proposal. One would have thought making a tight connection with the Good Friday appeal would have been a must. I'm sure there will still be a connection of sorts, it just seemed a natural fit with Ch7.

Or, are we still not talking to them?

I'm also not trying to cause offence, so please don't take it that way, but in a modern secular democracy, why should a small section of a minority (those who are truly observant, as bluechucky describes it) hold the vast majority of us to "ransom" and block us from watching footy?

How many religious Jews have missed out on years of watching and listening to their club playing because the matches were on Saturday, or even Friday night?

It just shouldn't be an issue.

Football only goes for 2.5 hours, leaving 21.5 hours on Good Friday to spend with the family.

Good Friday could be a big on the cards.

http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/story/ ... 61,00.html

"Carlton and Hawthorn have made a submission to play a match on the holy day and broadcasting negotiations already may be under way. "

Sounds like a good idea. Maybe someone should mention it to the AFL commission?

No disrespect to anyone, but the only good thing about religion in my life is a day off on Good Friday. If Carlton is playing on that day ... you beauty!!!!

They might be winging now, but I bet the Religious Leaders won't turn back the money raised from the game on the day!!

Im a Jew and every single one of my Chirstian friends complain to me that there is nothing to do on Good Friday-
While it is always important to listen and respect to the views of everyone (including the traditionalists who are opposed to Good Friday football) I think this éveryone' is increasingly becoming a smaller core group of people every single year. The Good Friday no footy 'traditition' is only implemented to pander to this decreasing number of people, and if we can find our own fixture (something weve been crying out for for almost a decade) we could really be on a winner.

As a Born Again Capitalist I have no issue with footy on good friday. I am however opposed to footy on June 30

what you might also relise is that European migrants in Australia have guarded their culture fervently in Aus while the rest of the world has moved on.

Im glad youre exercising choice though just as thousands of migrants who came here did. They practised their customs and celebrated traditions even if they fell on days that werent public holidays, some were even practising Christians.
Moved on to hamburgers ,Chicago Bulls caps and sport on every day of the week on your telly?

If you people think thats moving on......

People work 7 days a week... there are financial pressures with mortgages and school fees.. shithouse education systems...shithouse health that needs to be subsidised by private care... which means everybody is working harder and spending less time with their families which really is a cornerstone of society .
It haS to endure Friday night footy... Saturday day footy.. sunday day.. sunday night... pre season comps and on one day it has to add to it all for money???...

Nice one...

my point is youre Greek did you only observe Good Friday once every four years - dont thinks so, like the rest of us - people got choice

When my team plays on my Good friday i dont go. Even though its tempting.
I do enjy catching up with friends and family .

I reckon that because people are so busy these days they need a day without distractions to concentrate on the mst important things they have.. each other.

Its actually sad that people cannot entertain themselves one day of the year ... they cant invite people around for a bbq.. or go away for a long weekend... cant sit around and talk without distractons.
Its actualy weird...

We dont have anything to do .. we need the footy!!!

I find it unbelievaby weird...
Tome whether yure religious or not.. its a antastic opportunity for time without distractions with those you love most

And im sure some footballers would want the same thing.

We want our holidays but we dont like what comes with it.. abd cant give a stuff abut the footbalers holidays...

Just more and more pathetic...

Synners I see where youre coming from re: degradation of family time/ 7 days a week working etc, but surely arguing that Good Friay should be reserved for 'family time' is a band aid fix to a much broader and important social debate.
"Family time" should not be a capricious 'public holiday only' reservation- this, in my opinion, makes 'family time' seem more contrived and far less "meaningful."
I know, as a 20 year old, that the best examples of family time arent the family weddings or dinners etc, but sitting at the dinner table every night, having a chat to dad and mum on my break from Uni study, hell, even watching mum cut up tomatoes and cucumbers when she makes me her special salad for lunch :)

I think reserving family time for Good Friday and other special events cheapens what is, in reality, an invaluable part of our lives.
