I was hoping it was Nigel Lappin when I heard :(

We're gonna miss you Skinny. I wish he could have had the chance to win a Premiership with us.

I remember him saying that this was going to be his last year in January so I can't say that I'm surprised but still a little sad to hear it even if I think its the right time to move on.

At his best he was a dead set gun and he'll be missed.

Great player for us. Think he might have got a bit disillusioned towards the end. Injuries also didn't help. Showed in the international series, after an average year by his standards, what he was still capable of.

And one of our most interesting media performers, in that he always seemed to have something interesting to say. Didn't just toe the party line.

So come on boys, let's do it for Skinny. Tank away.

Shame he couldn't have had one last game to send him off, he had a great career. Now all we need is just one more player to retire WHITNALL.

A player who had great natural football skill.

Respect in retirement Skinny.

Yeah in 2004, he was AA

He had a good career and remember he was a 1999 GF player...and served Carlton well

We needed two Lappin's. One in the back line providing drive, and the other in the Forward Pocket.

Nigel and Matty.......

There is some good information on the Blueseum for those wanting to reminisce about Matthew Lappin.

In my books - i never lost faith in him as he could always give something to the club. Sad to see him go... if only the club could honour him the right way in a function next year?

Blueseum link below -

http://www.blueseum.org/cfc/tiki-index. ... hew+Lappin

Interesting fact re 2004 -

In 22 games at half back he averaged 20.2 disposals and 5.2 marks a game

And somehow he still missed out the b and f? but made the All-Australian despite our team being one of the worst.

very odd B&F voting pattern whilst Pagan has been at the Blues.

Well done Skinny, thanks for the memories.

A loyalty for the club that a couple of other scumbags whose names need not be mentioned in the same breath could have done with.

Love ya Matty, and I'll miss jumping off the couch and yelling "LAPPPPPPIIIINNNN" at the top of my lungs. The missus won't miss it quite as much

Thanks for the memories, especially all the new arseholes you ripped out Windy Hill way :-D

Overall, far more than a serviceable player. Well done Matty Lappin.

Yeah.....whenever Skinny was on the forwardline even in our darkest hours.....he added a rare thing called class and more importantly because we were so far down.....excitement.

Here was a guy who could take a screamer or kick a fantastic snap goal or unleash a torpedo from 60 yards out......Skinny was a matchwinner that the opposition under rated....but we never did.

We loved him....and we miss him already.

Matthew Lappin......Champion.

There were a couple of Essendon* players between him and the scum.

Well done on a great career Lappy. Was a shining light for a number of years there, AA once and unlucky not to be slected another year as well.

Can't help but thinking his heart wasn't 100% there after he missed out on the contract he wanted a couple of years ago, but his loyalty in sticking with us rather than going to Richmond will never be forgotten.

Congratulations to Matty Lappin and a massive thank you for all your efforts.

I'll never forget that massive hanger in 1999 against Essendon*. As people have mentioned on here already, the cheeky smile on your face in front of a handful of Scum players was absolutely brilliant.

I'll never forget in 2001 when we beat Essendon* off the back of your 5 goals. I remember Sheedy saying he couldn't believe what you'd done to get Carlton across the line. Sheedy jokingly claimed that no one went near you that because you didn't take a shower that morning or perhaps you'd been hiding behind the goal post for parts of the day. Your ability to kick goals on that day and most days was second to none.

I'll never forget that free kick that you got paid when we played Geelong in THAT game in 2002. Using your smarts you positioned your body in such a way that your opponent infringed on you and ended up giving you a free kick plus a 50 metre penalty. The result...a goal. You were a very smart player.

I'll never forget the way Richmond hounded you. Such is their way down at Punt Road, they chase any player who is worth a pinch of shit and offer said player the world. Most times I laugh at the players they go after. Names like Robert Copeland and Justin Blumfield are some that spring to mind, however, when they went after you my laughter turned to fear. For once the Tigers had gone after a name player and someone who could win a game off his own boot. It came down the 11th hour, but you took loyalty over the all mighty dollar and stayed with us. The cheer that went up when it was announced at the Family Day, IIRC, was overwhelming. I thank you for staying with us and despite playing through a very dark period I thank you for sticking it out to the very end.

Whatever you choose to do in life I wish you all the luck in the world. You can take comfort in the fact that you were lucky enough to represent the greatest football club in Australia on several occasions and you can take comfort in the fact that you did to the very best of your ability.

Thank you, Matty Lappin.

You'll always be remembered as a Carlton player.

Great player for the blues - good wishes.

Anyone notice on Deano's post of Lappin's blind turn and bomb, the hard running work the Fev did from the centre to the goal line?
