I've heard this quoted ad nauseum by the tanking crowd here, and was wondering when games of football go from being meaningful to meaningless. Obviously it's to do with draft picks, but fast forward to next year, when will games of football suddenly become 'meaningless' then?

If the current draft system is still in place then games become meaningless as soon as it is mathematically impossible for the team to make the eight.

They are meaningful in the sense that a number one pick rides on the result of them on top of the usual meaning attached to wins or losses. The most meaningful of all will be round 22 if we are still on 4 wins.

They are meaningless in the sense of ascribing any permanent positive effects from them if either or both are won in the next two weeks.

So...what you're saying is that in 2008 all of a sudden our games will become meaningful? Would this be accurate?

If so, a hypothetical. Halfway through the 2008 season, our team has performed under-expectation and has only won 3 'meaningful' games and have a tough run home. Are these remaining games still meaningful?

Put it this way.. since Pratt has come to the club things have changed.
Its akin to having a great job .. a great family .. a great home...you can see everything is on the up.. asnd you go out with Kevin Rudd in NYC to a girlie bar.. talk to a girl there.. take her home and bang her for 20 minutues.. and you piss everything up agaoinst the wall for a 20 minute feel good.
It all comes unstuck.. your wife may still stick around but things arent going as swimmingly if you didnt chase that 20 minutes of 'meaningless feel good'...but you just cant go back to change anything....

If I ever stop chasing that winning feeling, shoot me. I will have become too scared to do anything without having a 20-page business case ratified by a collection of avatars.

You don't need a 20-page business case, the whole concept is really quite simple to understand. Either you agree with it, or you don't.

I think tomato soup is meaningful.
It reminds me of me mum
of saturday arvos after the footy
of the smell of wet leather, wet wool and mud
of friends long gone - some even dead (farewell Tony)

The colour with some milk dripped in, the swirls
and the tangy taste
the old briquette fire in the background
glowing blue and red
behind the blackened glass

mum buttering bread to dip
my brothers coming home from the footy
excited
or sad by a loss

tomato soup is a meaningful culinary event
in the hisory of who I am

but others might not even like the taste

each to their own

Viva la tomato soup!

If you could ask King Leonidas was it meaningless for him and his 300 Spartans to "lose" their battle against the Persians.

It was probably pretty meaningless victory for King Xerxes.

But King Leonidas "meaningless" sacrifice ensured the victory of the Greek Forces.

But most of the lunatics around the asylum are rooting for the Judean Peoples Front Crack Suicide Squad type victories around here.

"We sure showed em - hey".

I'll admit that if I had the choice between losing games of football and having my country overrun and slaughtered by invading forces, then I'd probably choose not to die and to lose football games.

Is that what you're getting at?

What is 'meaningful'? What is 'meaningless'?
pfft! .. the answer is just another 'opinion' ..neither right or wrong.

While the AFL draft rules remain as they are, the tanking debate will continue into the future on all different levels of extremism. Just have to get used to it.

There are 6 core meaningful games, 6 non-core meaningless games, 7 non-core meaningful games and 3 core meaningless games.

so Xerses should have tanked that battle with the 300 spartans
and then he would have defeated greece?

If you are going to try to insult me at least quote me.

Your a bit like Basil Fawlty - if you are going to molest the young lady at least have the courtesy of being in the room with her at the same time.

wrong on the insult - stop being so touchy, for goodness sake Agro the idea of Xerses tanking was funny (to me anyway)

and therefore no need to quote anything.

when i plan to insult you I'll quote you first - okay. 8)

Otherwise go take your anger and attack some invading Hun with it

leave me to giggle at the meaningless of all this.....

Nah the Persians did never have an answer for the Greek 'Hoplite' defeated in Marathon-Platea-In Xenophons 'Ananabis' and again by Alexander the Great.

Losers!!!.. they should have tanked!!!
