Can anyone CONCISELY explain to me the events leading up to the sanctions from a few years ago? I was out of town at the time and haven't been able to get the entire story. I know vaguely that there were some players involved in undeclared payments etc., but what was the real story?

Well there was

Stephen O'reilly - the dark side of the force

Fraser Brown - the good guys

Well we systematically rorted the salary cap, got caught, but the caught was amplified because some players lagged on us, where Fraser Brown told the AFL to get nicked.

We got caught and rorted the sytem just like other clubs, but we at this stage appear to have been a lot worse.

The AFL thought they could kick us while we were down and not only fine us 1 million dollars, they thought they would rip the club to bits by penalising priority picks, first round picks, second round picks and pre season picks.

In that 5 years we have had two years of record memberships, even poorer recruiting, bad board leadership, lack of funds, and woeful win / loss ratio.

However come 2007 and into 2008, we will have brilliant membership, a new fresher coach, a magician as President in Dick Pratt and not only his billions but the ideas that got him his money, a coup in CEO Greg Swann, a brilliant list manager in Steven Icke, and the rebirth of the Navy Blues.

Don't think this is quite what you're after, but it's a start. You can search through the Blueseum for more info... It's too depressing for me.

Funny how this topic just came up, I was out working in the garage and listening to SEN when the salary cap discussion was taking place.

http://www.heraldsun.news.com.au/footy/common/story_page/0,8033,22218019%255E19742,00.html
There is an article in todays hun from Gerard Healy about how clubs are going outside the salary cap to pay players, the same thing Carlton was doing but in a legal way.
Have a read of the article, makes your blood boil knowing what happened to us.

The best comment on the radio was when Dermie mentioned James Hird was selling his house and all the bidding stopped at 750 thousand and then somebody jumped in and bidded 1.1Mill.

Difference was that Carlton were paying players in brown paper bags under the table from the AFL the ATO were as clubs now are doing it legit over the table and there is nothing the AFL can do about.

There is nothing the AFL can do if Dick Pratt hires Nicks Stevens to cut his grass and pays him 100 thousand a year and then reduces his contract in the TPP to fit other players in.

The closing line of that article...

But it's a fight the league is yet to acknowledge it is in.

Seems the AFL has a few of those. :x

At the present time where sanctions against any club other than Carlton are involved the AFL seem to have a hotline to the market gardeners around the Werribee area for endless supplies of wet lettuce leaves.

I don't think you're right there, bosman. Payments of salaries to players are (I think) included in the TPP.

But Nick Stevens has his own landscaping business, nothing to do with football.

Maybe is a wealthy associate of Dick Pratt hires and pays Nick Stevens 100 thou for cutting his grass - No conflict of interest there.

no this couldn't happen...

it would be like for example James Hird working part time for Ron Evans' son as a "stockbroker" at JB Were for $400K per annum.

no way - the AFL would be onto this like a ton of lettuce leaves :garthp:

Now now gentlemen, shame on you slandering a dead man who cant defend himself.

You know that in a court of law that a dead man cant has no rights to sue for defamation in this situation - even if the slanderer uses truth as a defence.

Gerard Healy is a brilliant writer and a brilliant commentator.

I have a great deal of respect for him, and I also appreciate the fact that he was one of the few that had a voice of reason about the salary cap situation.

This story is a must read.

http://www.heraldsun.news.com.au/footy/ ... 42,00.html

The time is now to forgive our club for salary cap "rorts", and move on.
There is evidence all around us that all clubs are continuing to do it.

Healy's point about the 92.5% situation was also impressive.
