Given that we are planning for the future, I thought I would have a go at picking the team for Round 1, 2008....

Anderson S.O'hAilpin Jamison
Walker Thornton Bower
Simpson Carazzo Waite
Gibbs Kennedy Scotland
Fisher Fevola Russell

A.O'hAilpin Stevens Murphy

Cloke Betts Jackson Hartlett

I have not included The Cruiser or any other potential draft picks but remember this is only for Round 1, I expect the Round 22 team might look a bit different.

As you can see, I'm in the "Keep Fev" camp. With a talented midfield ahead of him, he is worth too much to give away.

I think the dynamics of the side changes quite dramatically simply by adding Aisake and Stevens to the current mix. Not only does it mean we have an extra class midfielder that the opposition has to team up on but with Aisake contesting hitouts the opposition midfielders will not be getting as much of a free ride. We will have a pretty impressive midfield rotation with Eddie, Jacko, Tex, Scotland & Gibbs also in the mix. And having Cloke on the bench (assuming he recovers fully and put in like he was doing) will mean there will be no drop off in intensity in the ruck.

It also means that Carlos can concentrate on keeping the opposition's power forward under control.

One of the hardest decisions for me was where to put SoV. With Josh, Fev & Fish up forward I did not want another tall there on a permanent basis so opted to have Waite on the wing where he should be too strong in the air for most opponents but stillhave the pace to run with them. Depending on the opposition he could also take a running half-back role. I also thought Scotland would be more damaging if he was closer to goal.

I really liked Ando's attack on the man and the ball and I can see him owning the BP for some time, and if Jamo can keep up with his first game performance then he can readily take the other pocket.

I've included Bower and Hartlett to complete the 22 but there are others like Griggs, Blackers and Austin who would also be in contention.

Cannot wait to see 'em take the field.

Thoughts ???

But 4 wins or less in 2008 will give us Picks 1,2 and 3 in the National Draft.

Don't you have to know the opposition team before you pick your own side?

Play the kids, we need to see where they're at. Besides, there's a bright young thing just ripe for the picking in the 2008 draft.

Oh yeah, after we've sacked the board, I want the coach sacked too! Then trade Murphy and Gibbs, we have to better the Fevola deal from 07.

Are we tanking from Rd 1 2008? What's Gibbsy doing on the bench?

I shudder at the thought of Aisake being our number 1 ruckman - are people being realistic here?

Assuming Lance and Lappin retire, and only picking front current players.

I think O'hAilpin jrn will likely get a few runs in the Ants before making his debut.

Well, I can't pick a 22, because there is so much depending on retirements, delistings, development, preseason, etc. but I can pick a few that are certainties pending fitness and trades...it's probably not as interesting.

Fevola
Houlihan
Murphy
Gibbs
Walker
Setanta
Waite
Fisher
Simpson
Stevens
Thornton
Carrazzo
Scotland

These are the players I think have a good chance. I've put in bold AND underlined the players that are more than likely. A lot depends on the preseason and the NAB cup for these selections.

Russell
Kennedy
Bentick
Saddington

Ackland
Blackwell
Grigg
Bower
Betts
Austin
Hartlett
Anderson
Cloke
Jackson
Jamison
Aisake

So, this is my 19 players likely to play round one with no consideration to balance or opposition.

Pretty much agree with what's been put up, except Scotland. I'd rather take one of AGRO's PP's than have 'Scotto' line up again. FHO.
