On Brett Ratten - sure, he was rated highly by Melbourne, sure he still is. But if he's so good, then why have the last few years been as bad as they've been, if he was there as an assistant coach? Will installing him as coach really change much, really give that 'breath of fresh air'? And will it only strengthen the increasingly prominent "Boys Club" culture around Carlton, with Stephen Kernahan, an incredible player, leader, Blue, but terrible administrator, at it's head? Fraser Brown has already been brought back into the fold. Are all of Sticks' mates really the best candidates for their jobs? I don't know, but if there's any hint of "mate-helping-mate" in our staff appointments, then I'm worried we'll struggle to ever return to our glory days. It smacks of unprofessionalism, and failing to secure the best guys for the job will greatly hinder our shot of making it back to the big time.

Go Blues!
This part confuses me. Last few years at Melbourne being bad? I think this is the first year in a few they'll miss the finals. In 2005, I think the year Ratts was there, they were on top of the ladder at round 18 before falling away. Plus he's not the only coach there and certainly wasn't the head coach.

I read this as being in refernece to our last few years with Ratts as assistant coach.

Ratts has been assistant coach at Carlton for just 1 year, 2007, has he not?

Only 2 games in, but he has not done anything wrong, and has actually made some great positive changes in the way he uses the players on field, particularly taking some pressure off some of the youngsters and better mid-field rotations.

I cannot say I think using professional recruitment consultants is the way to go either. Not convinced they know much about coaching, training and managing a footy team. This of course is a problem facing all clubs ... but we seem to have Sticks as a significant player in this, and he certainly does not have a good record in this area.
