Thought Ratts spoke really well, with considered and genuine passion. I hope we look at at least half a dozen possibles, don't want LAidley or Thompson. About time we developed our own coach. DP should have taught us the dangers of poaching existing senior coaches who are coming for the money. Interesting that Ratts rang Britts for his advice. I think Britts might be a very unlucky bloke. Had he taken the Saints job when he was offered back in 2000, he might have been a premiership coach. Wouldn't mind him taking over the Ants from Mitch next year.

Thanks for that. :-D

To be honest, while Ratts said a lot of positive things, especially about the kids, I'm still a bit disappointed he had to think twice about taking on the caretaker's role.

Why? He wants to be a senior coach and this role could damage this ambition. Most people need to sleep on it and talk to the family before saying yes to a new job....

Ratts is a quality bloke. I've mentioned a few times he comes into the shop I work at now and then, and while we get quite a few AFL people come through, none of them are as down-to-earth as Ratts. Treats everyone with respect, and says exactly what's on his mind. There is definite passion there for the club and the supporters in those interviews, and I thin he deserves our admiration and 100% support and commitment for the rest of the year. His future afterwards shouldn't even be brought up to him.

The rumour mill suggests that Ratts was thinking twice because he was worried that if he lost 6 games that his future senior coaching ambitions would be damaged. If that is true it doesn't sound to me like his initial reaction was that he wanted it.

I'm by no means unhappy that he is in the caretaker's role, and I reckon barring a disaster in the next 6 weeks that you can pencil him for 2008, I just would have preferred it if the rumour mill suggested that Ratten put his hand up demanding the role as soon as was appropriate. To me, that would have been acting with passion, more so than speaking about it.

After listening to the second interview that Pklz has posted, the most pleasing thing about Ratten is his understanding of the role the supporters play in this club, inasmuch as he understands we need to see hope in our kids.

I don't think camel is being harsh....a job like this is perfect for an aspiring coach......hardly any games left in the season, no-one is expecting miracles from him.

ANY signs of improvement will go on the Plus side of his ledger. And if the players respond to him I doubt it will matter what the plans of the club are at this point, he would then be in the box seat to take over permanently.

If we show no improvement, it won't be his fault. The only problem I can see is if, God forbid, we get worse!

THAT would put an aspiring coach's entire career in jeopardy.

Personally, I'm a bit ambiguous about his appointment, but now he is there I will be behind him and willing him to be coach that we so badly need him to be.

Good luck Ratts!

Conversely, this opportunity could cement his future career. If you back yourself and have belief in your abilities, why would you think twice about an opportunity like that?
